380.0. "Had had enough had hads?" by DSSDEV::ROBINSON (Bill Robinson) Tue Jul 14 1987 14:10

(Sorry if the following belongs in another note.)

The following may be difficult to follow unless you remember
your grammar. Try it on your friends without writing it down,
or making it obvious by pausing or inflecting your voice:

Mary had had had had where John had had had. Had had had had
    	the teacher's approval.

The following makes the past perfects easier to understand:

Mary had had "had had" where John had had "had". "Had had" had had
    	the teacher's approval.

    And, how about:

	2 2 was a race horse
    	1 1 was one too.
2 2 won one race, and
    	1 1 won one too.

380.2Had ** 11ZWODEV::NOBLETue Jul 14 1987 15:2114
     Re .0:
I always think this is more effective as:
John whereas Mary had had had had had had had had had
     had had the teacher's approval.

     I.e.:
John, whereas Mary had had "had had", had had "had". "Had had"
     had had the teacher's approval.

Such sequences have been discussed somewhere in some conference
but I can't remember offhand whether it's in here or in (the now
     sadly lost) Brain_bogglers.

Brain_bogglers returned yesterday. There is nothing in it, but
it has returned. Once you get in check 1.1

The "had....." thing turned up before (can't remember whether it
was here or in GRAMMAR), but whoever put in the original note actually
typed twelve "hads" instead of eleven. So I suppose we could validly say:

Note x.y, while note x.z had had had ...........

This would give you 40 "hads". On the other hand, if I miscounted....

This seems to be a variation on the more common

"That that is is that that is not is not is that it it is"

which one is supposed to punctuate so that it makes sense. The
    proper answer is

"That that is, is. That that is not, is not. Is that it? It is."
