346.0. "A new triplet word-game" by GENRAL::JHUGHES (NOTE, learn, and inwardly digest) Thu Apr 16 1987 15:55

The new wordgame -- an extension of the word game described in 339.0.

    First, some definitions:

o A triplet -- a string of three letters which are in contiguous alphabetic
sequence. The alphabet is treated as a circular list and hence the set
of all possible triplets contains 26 members, including YZA and ZAB.

o An inclusion -- one or more letters inserted between the first and second,
or the second and third members of a triplet so as to form a meaningful
      English word.

o A meaningful English word -- one that is defined in a reference work
such as Webster's Collegiate or the Oxford English dictionary.

o An addition -- one or more letters that precede or follow a triplet
(with or without inclusions) so as to form a meaningful English word.

    o Triplet-word -- a meaningful English word, formed from a triplet by
using (possibly zero) inclusions and/or additions.

    Rules:

    1. The object of the game is to form a triplet-word for all of the 26
possible triplets, using the smallest number of inclusions.

    2. If multiple triplet-words exist with the same number of inclusions,
preference is given to the one with the smallest number of additions.

    Conventions:

I have posted a reply to this note which represents my initial "straw man"
attempt at producing an optimal set of triplet-words (hereafter "words").
For convenience it is set out in columns representing possible words with
zero, 1, 2, 3, or more than 3 inclusions. The letters of the triplet
are capitalized, inclusions and/or additions are in lower case.
Wild-cards are used to define target words that are superior to those
    presently posted.

The suggested words contained in note 339 are included -- with one
    exception. 339.9 says:

> ABCoulomb (Ok, I cheated, I looked it up)

In contrast to all other words used in .1, this one is not in Webster's
New Collegiate dictionary; maybe the author of 339.9 can quote his source
    and post a reply.

I suggest that as players find one or more improved words, the entire
current set should be copied to form a new reply, and that the previous
"best" word(s) be left in place. (If both the new and the old word fall in
the same "inclusions" column, then catenate them as <new>,<old>.)

This has two benefits: the revision is made evident, and if by common
agreement a newly-proposed word is rejected, it is simpler to back it out
and leave the old word in place.

In cases where a player has doubts about the validity of a word, it is
suggested that a short reply be posted consisting of the single line
extracted from the current full set of words (including the triplet number
from column 1). The proposed new word should be displayed for ratification
    / rejection by other players.

I hope that the game may be played in a spirit of agreement arrived at
by consensus, but if all else fails -- as always -- the moderator's word
    is final!

    Go to it ...

    Two comments:

    1. Webster's DOES include JacKLeg ("Lacking skill or training, etc)
-- which can be used as an improvement ...

    2. ... not to #11, which is KLM, but to #10, which is JKL.

It is a unit of electrical charge = 10 coulombs.
