345.0. "Lex this" by ARMORY::CHARBONND () Wed Apr 08 1987 09:43

    A columnist for Guns & Ammo magazine, Jeff Cooper,
    uses the word "hoplophobe" to indicate people with
    a fear of guns. Is this a real word ? A new word ?
    Or just a joke I'm missing ?

    I thought "sensible" was the word for people with a fear of guns.

Maybe it's an extention of fear from Hop'long Cassidy.

    My American Heritage says a 'hoplite' was a heavily armed footsoldier
    of ancient Greece. It's possible this is the root.

    Fear of heavily armed foot soldiers seems even more sensible thatn
    a fear of guns.

    > Fear of heavily armed foot soldiers seems even more sensible thatn
    > a fear of guns.

    ... especially when they've made several movies, and know twice
    as many words :-)
