291.0. "Favorite words" by BAEDEV::RECKARD () Fri Dec 12 1986 07:29

Certain words, even certain syllables, intrigue me - mostly by
their pronunciation, but also, by their seemingly random assemblage
    of letters.

Anyway, a handful of my favorite words:

sphygmomanometer that blood pressure gadget that goes on
                        your arm

strengths the longest (I'm told) word with one vowel

thlibo (Non-English words shouldn't count, but this
one is my all-time favorite.) A transliteration
                        from Greek, meaning I persecute.
It just thlips off your tongue, doesn't it?

palimpsest - something that's been written on and incompletely erased
several times, so bits of the various writings all show. (This one
struck me like many of the better sniglets do - "what a great concept
for which to have a word!")

Re .12

There are several other ways of rendering this "salute":

1. Hold up the index, middle, and ring fingers pressed together; say
"Can you read between the lines?"

2. Hold up all five fingers; say "Take the average." (A likely
response is "Average this.")

3. Hold up all the fingers except the middle finger; say "It's a
complement." (The insulted may hear "compliment".)

Also, hold up just your little finger and say,

"You don't deserve the best"

    > strengths the longest (I'm told) word with one vowel

Strengths's longer if you allow contractions.

Wait a minute. That just says strengths is longer than strengths.

    OK, got it.

"Strengths's"'s longer if you allow contractions.

    "'Strengths's''s"'s even longer.

    Current fetish words include:

      Extremities (cold hands, hot-headed)

Mojo (and its distant cousin, "mofo")

Contentment (I'm not sure why I prefer it to the very similar
      "fulfillment")

Conundrum (I like its vaguely threatening sound and "orig. unknown")

    Ray (another "palimpsest" fan)
