261.1 | this might work... | LYMPH::LAMBERT | Note(d) Author | Tue Oct 21 1986 15:55 | 7 |
| You might check out BULOVA::VMS_ENCRYPTION. (Press KP7 or SELECT
to add it to your notebook.) I've never looked at the conference,
but it's there, according to the list.
Also, I believe the term you want is "encryption algorythm".

261.2 | No, no. I mean spy stuff. | BAEDEV::RECKARD | | Tue Oct 21 1986 16:11 | 9 |
| I guess I used the wrong phrase(s) here in the land of computers.
I'm referring to the coded messages one spy-type-person would send
to another. You know, coding "Hello" as 8-5-12-12-15".
Someone working for Army intelligence (I know, I know, an oxymoron)
would be the kind of person I'd want to talk to.
Thanks anyway.

| RE: 261.1 I believe BULOVA::VMS_ENCRYPTION discusses the
VAX/VMS Encryption layered product, and not cryptosystems in
general.
If CLT::MATH won't work (there are some sharp people who
participate there), try sending mail to the Usenet discussion
group net.crypt or sci.crypt, by mailing to RHEA::DECWRL::"net.crypt".
There's often more heat than light there, but you'll generate
discussion.

| Re .4:
If anybody sends mail to net.crypt or sci.crypt, they should be sure to
subscribe to the group so they see the answers to their mailing. To do
this, send mail to ROLL::USENET. Be certain to have the word
"subscription" in the subject line, because this causes an automatic
procedure to grab your subscription request and process it. The
message should contain these lines:
$USELIST ADD BAEDEV::RECKARD net.crypt
$USELIST ADD BAEDEV::RECKARD sci.crypt
You can also put in a line to have a list of the available groups
sent to you:
$USELIST LIST

forces, you might try the UCOUNT::VETERANS conference.

| Before you do any of this, you might want to check some sources.
1) _The_ book, either through your library, or possibly the
much-shorter paperback version of _The Codebreakers_ by David Kahn.
It will give _all_ the fundamentals.
2) A journal available at Digital's corporate library, _Cryptologia_.
This is a quarterly journal on the subject of codes/ciphers.
3) Books published by Agaen Park Press. I don't have their address
handy, but they're probably listed in _Books In Print_. Strictly
cryptology house. They have reprints of Friedman's stuff, plus
some interesting new goodies, including simulations of some WW II
mechanical cryptosystems. LOTS of good stuff there!
