254.0. "parenthetical rules?" by REGENT::MERRILL (Glyph it up!) Thu Oct 02 1986 08:49

    In "normal" english parenthetical remarks (like this) are placed
    in parentheses and editorial remarks [Who cares?] are placed in
    brackets. NOW we have braces { } and angle brackets < > and other
    items -< >- // // . My question is, what are the proper uses of
    braces and angle brackets?

254.1I wish I knew more wordsATFAB::REDDENSeeking the Lost IllusionThu Oct 02 1986 10:176
    I {like/prefer} to use braces to compensate for my limited
    vocabulary. If I can thing of {two/several} words that are
    close, but not {quite/exactly} precise, I will put them in
    braces with slashes between them. This usually aggravates
    the folks around me enough that they will suggest a single
    word that would have communicated what they thought I meant.

    I use angle brackets for my <shelves>, but only for this word.

    Simple. Angle brackets are used for <TOPS20> directory names.
    Curly braces are used for {HPA1500} LNF commands. Not to mention
    programs written in C.

    They're really just there for hackers, right?
254.4A point of confusionSSDEVO::GOLDSTEINThu Oct 02 1986 20:465
    Parenthetical remarks, which are introduced by the pronoun "which,"
    needn't always be placed within parentheses; they are properly set
    within commas.

    I use "suspenders" to hold up my pants (if I wasn't wearaing a belt).
    I had my "braces" removed from my mouth a long time ago.
