205.0. "Name that Name" by PROSE::WAJENBERG () Fri Jun 13 1986 14:44

People typically address their parents and other relatives with words
other than their given names: "Mom," "Dad," "Mother," "Granny,"
"Grampa," "Auntie," etc. Does this category of appellation have
a name, analogous to pen names, stage names, the nom de plume
and nom de guerre, nicknames, surnames and maiden names?

Hmm. When used without an article or possessive pronoun, are
these words nouns or are they pronouns?

      "I told Mother the news."
              ^
Capital letter because it refers to a particular mother,
hence, it's almost a name, but not in the same sense as a real
      name, like, say, Jane.

I seems to act like a name (hence a noun), but it clearly has
an implied antecedent, like a pronoun.

Perhaps the first person possessive pronoun is always understood
in this construction ('my', 'mine', or 'our').

There's almost always an example of one writer or another who disdained
the rules of grammar--usually the written, not the pronounced, rules.
Shaw, for example, thought most punctuation was unnecessary. ("I
dont expect him to reply directly, Mrs Worthington stated.") e.e.
cummings used lowercase exclusively, even in writing his name.

Your use of the word "disdain" brings up an interesting topic. "Dis obviously
is a negative prefix here. Does that mean that the rest of the authors dain
the rules of grammar?

The same would apply to words like "disheveled". (Have you ever seen anyone
who looked "sheveled"? Or "kempt", for that matter. ("Hmmm-mmm, you look
very kempt today. And sheveled as well.")

BU (Pronounced "boo!")

>very kempt today. And sheveled as well.")

I think the word is then "heveled", not "sheveled".

Kind of like the /TIFY switch:

Actually, the *real* qualifier is almost as funny:

There are *lots* of Fun Things To Do With VAXnotes. I get to say
a lot of "dirty" words (DIR/TI=FOO), and make lots of exclamations
(O JOY, O NO [TES], etc.). I've debated renaming a couple of entries
    TEMPORA and MORES...
