177.0. "Wellness??" by DSSDEV::ROBINSON () Mon Apr 21 1986 22:50

I am amused (and disgusted) by the name of the new Spitbrook Road
    health/physical fitness room:

    	The Wellness Center

Couldn't they have come up with something more sensible,
    like:

    	The Fineness Center
    	The Wonderfulness Center
    	Her Highness' Center
    	The Hole-you-draw-water-from-ness Center
    	The Goodness Gracious Center
    	The Swellness Center
    	The Wicked-awesomness Center

Don't knock it. It's the thought that counts.

    To your wellness!

A few years ago the State of California established a Department
of Wellness. The Today Show reported it by also pointing out that
folks in that department, having considered the word "DEATH" too
harsh, began referring to it as a "NEGATIVE PATIENT OUTCOME".

The reporter then suggested that marriage ceremonies could be changed
    to read:

. . . in sickness and wellness, until negative patient outcome
    	do us part.

    YUCK!

Gee, they must have been talking to the Army who reported a death
from de-acceleration wounds. The poor man fell from the end of
a rope attached to a helicopter.

These remind me of a rejection form letter I received from a Navy
installation I applied to during one of the many gawdawful meat
market tech fairs I attended as I was about to graduate from college:

"You have been non-selected for the position of..."

    Non-selected?

Yup, as they say, it's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden
    stop.

A techie at a customer site I visited last week talked about a
    performance "deprovement."

A recent movie, I can't remember the name, spoke of the cause of
death of a man who was thrown from the roof of a building as
"deceleration trauma" or "concrete poisoning". The movie starred
Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines (?) and was about these two
    best-of-friends-cop-partners in Chicago.
