We are building an extensive on-line documentation system for PCXX. It will contain a manually-generated index/keyword list pointing to locations in the text. Is there any science or methodology to indexing? How do people (like real reference book writers) decide upon what index terms to use and what not to use, and which locations to refer to and which locations don't merit a reference? It would be really helpful if our writers and editors had some guidance in this matter. It would be great to find a worthwhile textbook on this subject. Thanks. Betty Steinfeld (SMURF::STEINFELD) may be able to help you. I believe she is an expert in the field. I had quite a long correspondence with her some time ago on this subject. She has been studying indexing since 1978, and has produced several internal DEC books on this. Jeff. |
