I am currently working on a readability program which can perform a variety of tests for judging the "grade level" of a book. Most of the tests such as Dale/Chall and Flesch tests are simple enough to implement however one test requires a working word list. All I really need is to be able to look up a word in a list and fit it into its proper classification. Question: Where can I find any word list (preferably as large as possible) similar to the one used by the SPELL program? Alternatively, how can I decrypt the words in the SPELL program dictionary? Please respond either here or to HYDRA::THALLER Thanks in advance, Kurt*

I believe that the spell dictionary is based upon a dictionary database that DEC licensed from a major publisher. If you do succeed in decrypting it, be careful in what you do with it.

I've got a large list (you'll be hard-pressed to think of words not in it!) that you're welcome to use. All the words are in SPRITE::DRB3:[OSMAN.WORDS]. The a's are in file AZ.TXT, the b's in BZ.TXT, etc. Have fun ! /Eric p.s. I've been using these word lists for about ten years here at Digital. I originally got them from John Xenakis who says they come from some old customer benchmark tape. So it's possible they're copyrighted, although if so the source is fairly ancient now. Just a warning.

Can you make your readability program publicly available when it's done? I'd love to have one. Val

re .2 Thanx for the lists, it's exactly what I was looking for. re .3 I should have the program finished by the end of the month. I will make globally accessible when finished and I'll post a note here. Kurt*

Perhaps you should consider submitting it to the Toolshed. Jeff. |
