91.0. "meaningful permutations" by DVINCI::MPALMER () Tue Aug 13 1985 16:17
ok, whitesmiths.
I am involved in implementing a conceptual-art piece which needs some words.
The idea is to use words for percussion by hooking up a syntheziser to
trigger words so they can be "played" as drums would be.
I'm trying to construct a set of words to program into the synthesizer
such that:
a
a- they are all of roughly the same length (monosyllabic, for instance)
so that durations are uniform. Actually, shorter, more percussive
words would be best.
b- all (or most) of the permutations of word order within this set
either
have meaning and are grammatical
or
have syntactic structure but are nonsense (as in Broca's aphasia?)
these are not strict rules; the intent is to have the "drummer" be able to
keep time by "playing" these triggers somewhat as drums would be, and
have a large amount of what comes out be fragments, or semi-understandable.
anybody care to take a shot at it?

| Are you familiar with Philip Glass' _Einstein on the Beach_? The singers
in it produce some interesting gestalt effeects by singing either the beats
that are are on (1 2 3 4 2 3 4 5 6 3 4 7 8), or the "do re mi"
representation of their parts. You could try this.
