  During recent hearings to select a new Superintendent for the Boston 
  Schools, the School Committee was treated to a series of questions/
  comments from one member who characterized the candidate (to his 
  face) as "not your typical Hispanic...you're cool...a smooth 
  dresser...obviously not from a Public Housing background..."

  As unprincipled as his self-proclaimed "tough interviewer" tactics 
  were, one of his opponents on the Committee was taped during
  an interview for WEEI and she said (among other things):

  "We can't allow this kind of racial epitaph to go unchallenged!"

	Public meetings tend to be a source of this kind of misuse. You tend to forget certain key words when you have to think on your feet. At a recent meeting of our homeowner's association, the management company representative (who was under considerable fire) said that a particular budget item would be "in the $25,000... uh... er... vernacular." I guess she was aiming for "vicinity." Val
