47.0. ""Breakin", yup, is hard to do" by VIA::LASHER () Mon Feb 04 1985 10:55

No doubt, the highlight of my new "V4 docset" is the "Guide to VAX/VMS
System Security" (Note 1). Besides having the best cartoons of any
technical manual I've ever seen, it coins the word "breakin". Some of
the typical motives for an attempted "breakin" are "fun", "revenge",
and "World domination" (See Table 1-1 on page 1-5). Since "detailed
information about proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage" is
not listed among the top motives, this notes file should be relatively
free from "breakins."

Note 1. I suspect that the name of a volume from among a multi-volume
series should probably be underlined, rather than quoted. Aside from
the issue of determining the proper punctuation, there is the much
more crucial of issue of how to produce underlined text in a notes
   file. (Note 2)

Note 2. This leads to the still more crucial issue of the proper method
of entering footnotes in a notes file.

The VMS documentation does not contain the first instance in print of the word
"breakin." For example, there was a film called "Breakin" a couple of years
ago, followed by "Breakin 2 Electric Boogaloo." I admit I was under the
impression that it was a harmless sport practiced by inner-city youth, and had
no idea that breakin could lead to world domination.

There are two closely related ways of showing underlining on a CRT.

1.	_Warren Peace_

	     and

2.	_Warren_Peace_

They have been used extensively in several files that deal with books.

Excuse me, did someone say they wanted to underline some `text'?

Yes, but embedded escape sequences are considered gauche.

Especially since they don't work under VAX NOTES.
