Why do some parts of the country call it DWI or Driving While Intoxicated or DUI Driving While Under the Influence? What's the difference? Is it the same sort of regional difference as FREEWAYS and EXPRESSWAYS? Pat Sweeney

In some parts of the country, there is a legal distinction between DWI and DUI. Although this is not an authorative statement, I seem to recollect that DUI refers to a blood alcohol level that implies less than sober, but not legally drunk. DWI, on the other hand, usually refers to a BA level greater than .1% -- legally drunk in most states. (Some states define "legally drunk" at a lower level than .1%.) Andrew | |||||

It is my impression that Driving Under the Influence (DUI) is a more general term that includes driving under the influence of such things as prescription or controlled drugs, whereas Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) is specific to alcohol. Mike |
