23.0. "DIGITAL Dictionary" by RAINBW::STRATTON () Thu Oct 25 1984 17:29

The DIGITAL Dictionary Committee is seeking technical terms and definitions for
the Second Edition, to be published soon. If you have terms and definitions, or
know sources of such terms, that are not in the First Edition and are likely
additions to the Dictionary, please contact Bob Marotta, Dictionary Chairperson,
at RAINBW::MAROTTA.

The Dictionary is available on-line (as well as in hardcopy, from DIGITAL Press)
if you wish to check terms that are in the First Edition. The on-line version is
available through the Tools Clearinghouse. (See METOO""::TOOLS$LIBRARY:
GLOSSARY.LIS for more details.)

Feel free to pass this message along to anyone who may represent a group that
would like its' product-specific technical terms added to the Dictionary.

This Note is a serious request. I know, that means it probably doesn't belong
here. However, it may provide a little justification for this Notesfile.

Has anyone ever used the DIGITAL Dictionary, either in hardcopy or the (VMS)
on-line version?

Jim Stratton

...or is that hard-copy and online?

First Edition - published December, 1983
	Second Edition- published October, 1985

Third Edition - now in development

The DIGITAL Dictionary Committee has established a new procedure for
accepting entries into the Third Edition of the DIGITAL Dictionary.
This new procedure, through Notes, will essentially allow everyone to
function as a member of the Dictionary Committee.

The new procedure is now operative and will continue until final production
of the Third Edition begins, approximately 18 months from today.

The new procedure comprises the following elements and steps:

ENTRIES
. ENTRIES can be submitted by anyone through this notefile.

. An ENTRY is a term AND DEFINITION, or an abbreviation AND
ITS EXPANSION; any term without a definition, or abbreviation
without an expansion cannot be considered.

. Each ENTRY must be labeled "generic" if used industry-wide,
"DIGITAL-specific" if used the same way within DIGITAL by at
least four product or system groups, or "product-specific"
accompanied by a product or system name if it is unique to
	  one product or system group.

. The submitter must be reasonably sure of the ENTRY'S technical
	  accuracy and completeness.

. Anyone, then, may comment on the ENTRY, its definition or
expansion, or its technical accuracy and completenes.

. The Chairperson of the DIGITAL Dictionary Committee, Bob Marotta,
will monitor this notefile, periodically review all ENTRIES,
review submitters' and non submitters' comments, and determine
the APPROPRIATENESS for including it in the Third Edition.

. The Chairperson will periodically meet with established sub-
committee representatives for final approval. The subcommittee
has been established, but members have not yet been selected.
The subcommittee will consist of a software developer/engineer,
	  a software writer, a hardware developer/engineer, and a hardware
	  writer.

Volunteers for this subcommittee are welcome. The Chairperson will
later announce in this notefile the names of the subcommittee
          members.

OTHER SUBMISSIONS

. OTHER SUBMISSIONS are any term without definition, any abbreviation
without expansion, or any recommendation for addition or deletion
	  of any kind.

. Anyone, then, may submit proposed definitions or expansions, or
may comment on any aspect of OTHER SUBMISSIONS.

. The procedure for review and acceptance of any of the OTHER
SUBMISSIONS will be the same as for ENTRIES.

These procedures are designed to open up the DIGITAL Dictionary to
company-wide participation in its content, organization, format, and
technical accuracy and completeness.

Suggestions for modifying these procedures are welcome.

Thank you,
Bob Marotta
