19.0. "Personal Dictionaries" by HYSTER::MITCHELL () Wed Oct 03 1984 10:28

I have a strange request for anyone who uses the SPELL
application on VAX . . . .

How would you like to mail me a copy of the Personal
        dictionary you use in SPELL?

Ah, you ask why I should desire such a thing? Simple: I'm
currently taking a graduate course in the History of the English
Language and I'm collecting some notes on current trends. The
personal dictionary created by the SPELL application holds all
the words that either you've misspelled (and thought you hadn't)
or that the VAX doesn't find in its master dictionary.

It's this latter set of words that interests me. Those
non-identifiable words frequently say something about where the
language is going (to hell in a user-friendly handbasket). I
have a fairly large compendium already, but I'd be interested in
enlarging it with any inputs from abroad.

If you'd like to contribute to the word hoard, please mail your
PERSONAL.LGP file to me at HYSTER::MITCHELL.

Thanks a lot,

Mark Mitchell

(I don't use SPELL myself, so can't help you there...)
Is DEC paying for this course? You must have a singularly enlightened
manager if you've been able to convince him or her that it's
important for a person in the computer industry to know something
about the English language.

First, thanks to those of you who contributed your dictionaries
-- I appreciate your interest in the project.

Second, the paper is done and available for any who would care to
see it. Send mail to me at HYSTER::MITCHELL if you want a copy.
If the requests overwhelm me (yeah, right . . .) I'll post it
here.
