| The basenote sounds roughly like a glitch I've been experiencing. I
purchased a Bell South cordless phone (25 channels, 10 presets) last
fall and like it a lot -- great sound, adequate range, a pleasure not
to race down the hall to answer the phone, etc. But there has been an
occasional glitch that has come with it: every so often (usually
between midnight and 2am) the phone will ring ONCE - not a "chirp" or
a "ring-ring", just ONE normal ring. The first couple times it
happened I pressed the ON switch and got only a dial tone; after a
while I learned to wait for a second ring before answering.
Is there any way of comfirming just what is happening here? This has
happened maybe a dozen times since I got the phone, though it hasn't
given me the "single-late-night-ring" for a few weeks now -- I'm
starting to get a bit paranoid 'cause it hasn't ;^)

782.25 | you too? Mine is fixed now. | FIEVEL::FILGATE | Bruce Filgate SHR3-2/W4 237-6452 | Mon Mar 17 1997 07:36 | 22 |

After go arounds with the phone company and law enforcement about my
mid-night to 2 AM single rings, I got mine fixed.
This is the time period that the phone company uses to test their
circuits. They apply a voltage that is theoretically low enough
to test the ringer, but to NOT ring the phone. Some of the new high
tech phones are much too sensitive and do ring.
A heart to heart chat with the teleco engineers ended the problem
for a few months, and then it started again. A heart to heart
chat with the telco engineering manager seems to have ended the
problem for good....or at least 3+ years.
In fairness to the telco, my street is very long and has old wires,
the signal loss probably demanded the higher voltage. Engineering
also said that the line should not have been tested as frequently as
it was getting tested.

| Guess I shouldn't tempt fate....
The damn phone gave a 1:45am ring two nights ago, after a couple weeks
of no glitches. I suppose it heard that I made a complaint in NOTES
and decided to speak up :^|.... still, this is only a minor annoyance
'cause I'm usually too zonked to hear the phone ;^)
Re. .25 thanx for the explanation! I suspect that my phone lines are
pretty old too, since I live in a rural area.
