1448.0. "Question concerning gaining benefit from a pig" by BUBBLS::GROSS (The bug stops here) Wed Feb 01 1995 21:13

Is there anything in halacha that would prohibit a Jew from
disecting a pig for a biology class?

For my barmitzvh I was given an attache case that was
covered in pig skin. Thinking it strange, I was told that
there is no restriction on a Jew gaining benefit from a pig.

I still use it, so hopefully I hve not been making any
    transgression!

There is also the case of pig products that are used in medicine
such as replacement heart valves and skin grafts. I'm not aware
of there being any problem in this area, and to acheive this
someone has to disect a pig.

There are prohibitions against benefiting from (1) milk and meat of a kosher
animal cooked together, (2) chametz on Pesach (and chametz that was owned by
a Jew on Pesach), and (3) items used for idol worship. I don't know of any
other items from which it's forbidden to benefit. There is no prohibition
against benefiting from pig products, but I believe there's a rabbinical
prohibition against raising pigs.
