1427.0. "Bris on Yom Kippur?" by HAMAN::GROSS (The bug stops here) Wed Sep 21 1994 01:09

The Sunday before Yom Kippur I had the pleasure of attending a brit milah
(circumcision ceremony). It made me wonder what happens if the day for the
bris comes our on Yom Kippur. If the bris is performed on Yom Kippur
(my guess is that the bris takes precedence), what about the seudat mitzvah
(festive meal) and the baby presents?

Could a family postpone a bris until after YK, given the difficulty of
holding it one the day of YK (how is the mohel supposed to get there)?
Does a bris on shabbos pose similar problems, especially when family and
friends (not to mention the mohel) are shomer shabbat (observe the Saturday
restrictions), except that a regular shabbos is not a fast day.

Having just had a baby son whoes circumsision will be next Saturday, I
can tell you that there isn't any problem. If the eighth day falls on
Saturday, YK or whatever, the Brit will take place on that day. If for
some [Medical] reason the baby couldn't be circumsied on the eighth
day, the Brit is postponed to a weekday. With regard to travel, either
the mohel walks, or stays over the Shabbat/YK in the area. WRT Seudat
Mitzvah on YK, the Seudah is not part of the Mitzvah itself and as such
isn't required. The only thing that is important is the "Brit" itself.
I do remember reading someplace about a problem with regard to the wine
on YK, but after the fast of Gedaliyah came and went and no birth, I
    didn't investigate the issue further.
