From Paul Samuels @REO
DECUS Europe Symposium'94
Why your customers should be there.
The DECUS Europe Symposium is the only major Digital focused event to be
organised in Europe this year and as such attracts many keynote speakers
included Bob Palmer, Jesse Lipcon, John O'Keefe, and many more including top
technology and product experts from the USA and Europe.
Your customers will be able to see live demonstrations of Digital's latest
products and technology at the Digital Technology Centre, attend formal
sessions covering subjects from raw technology to business and industry issues,
as well as visit the Partner's Exhibition offering complementary solutions.
The Symposium offers your customer opportunities to gain value for money
training, exchange information and ideas, solve problems, establish new
contacts, and discuss issues and technology with Digital's experts.
Overall, this traditionally technical forum, which has recently also been
enlarged to discussing business-oriented issues as well, is an excellent
opportunity for customers and people interested in Digital to be informed on
Digital strategy and products.
Where and When?
The 1994 DECUS Europe Symposium will take place this year from Monday September
12 to Friday September 16 in the Palais des Festivals et des Congrs in Cannes,
France.

1422.1 | It happens every year... | NAC::OFSEVIT | card-carrying member | Mon Jul 25 1994 18:49 | 18 |
| This is the same old <expletive deleted> that seems to happen every
year. There are many old threads in this file about this same kind of
insensitivity.
Networld+Interop is also scheduled for that week in Atlanta. I
have pointed out to them (with thundering silence in response) that
since their exhibits (which attract most of the attendance) run only
Wednesday through Friday, and Yom Kippur is Wednesday evening through
Thursday, a lot of Jews will simply not attend. What, Dan Lynch worry?
The response to this is usually "Gee, no wonder it was so easy to
get those dates at the convention center!"
I'll send mail to Paul Samuels @ REO with a copy of the calendar we
keep somewhere in this file, not that it can change the current
situation.

Subj: European DECUS schedule
Hello,
I do not know whether you are aware that the week selected for
European DECUS this year is the week during which the Jewish High Holy
Day of Yom Kippur falls. Most Jews observe this day in some form, and
it actually lasts from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday evening.
It is family- and community-centered, and I believe you will find that
many potential Jewish DECUS participants will simply stay home this
year.
I request that you and the DECUS committees pay closer attention to
the calendar in future schedules. Besides being considerate of others'
personal needs, it is also a practical business matter, since as an
employee, a shareholder, and an occasional DECUS participant I feel we
must take every step to maximize the effectiveness of our events.
The attached calendar, which explains this in more detail, is
available on the TAVENG::BAGELS notes file. It has also been widely
distributed via various Valuing Differences groups within Digital.
Thank you.

You're excused. :-)
> Eir ver goonisht helfen.
I think it sounded like "Es vill goornischt helfen" when my parents
said it.
Anyway... Paul Samuels is just a person who was asked to forward
the message. I have heard from another person who was involved in
actual planning, and I am waiting for permission to post that reply.
If I don't get permission I will paraphrase. Stay tuned. The bottom
line is "Es vill goornischt helfen," of course, but we have to keep
hammering at the powers that be.
Interesting side issue: I just checked the WWW listing for
Networld+Interop which is scheduled that same week, and they have
flip-flopped their schedule. Normally they do seminars Monday and
Tuesday and run the exhibition and conference Wednesday-Friday. In
Atlanta they will run the exhibition and conference Monday-Wednesday
and have the seminars following. That will actually allow people to
attend the show early in the week and be home by erev Yom Kippur,
although exhibitors will be in a bind of having to leave before closing
time Wednesday. The last day of a show is always the slowest, of
course.

1422.5 | the party line | NAC::OFSEVIT | card-carrying member | Tue Jul 26 1994 21:12 | 22 |
| The person who got in touch with me would prefer not to have their
messages posted, so here's a summary (my interpretation) of the
situation:
1. European DECUS has been held in September for over 20 years and the
committee was aware of the number of Jewish holidays during the month
this year. (I wonder why they are so inflexible. What's magic about
September?)
2. They feel that this will affect less than 2% of potential
participants. (I question their number, which is probably based on
percentages of the general population. Our industry has a much higher
proportion of Jews in it. Also, how can they measure the number of
people who quietly refuse to participate?)
3. The European DECUS Council ok'd the date without opposition from
the Israeli rep. (I'll leave it for the folks in Israel to comment on
*that*!)
Yeah, sure. Es vill goornischt helfen.

Do I hear strains of "Fiddler?" Yes, it's "Tradition."

Interesting bit is that one of these three gentlemen happens to be of the
Jewish persuasion.
