1400.0. "Looking for Orthodox minyan near Maynard ..." by TAV02::CHAIM (Semper ubi Sub ubi .....) Mon Mar 21 1994 11:32

Can anyone tell me where I could find the closest orthodox minyan for Shacharis
near Maynard.

Thanks,

Cb.

There's no orthodox shul really close to Maynard in any direction.
The nearest one in Newton is well over 1/2 hour drive. There is Chabad
in Lexington, which would be a little closer (20 minutes), but I don't
know how organized they are about having a minyan.

Where are you staying? You might be better off (for eating as well
as davening) staying in Newton or Brookline.

There's an orthodox shul in Lowell, the one which houses the Merrimack
Valley Hebrew Academy. Arnie Polikoff should know this (are you
    'listening' Arnie?).

Lowell isn't much closer to Maynard than Brookline is.
1400.4What about the traffic ?STAR::FENSTERYaacov Fenster, OpenVMS Quality and Tools @ZKO3/4W15 381-1154Tue Mar 22 1994 05:092
Wouldn't the traffic in the morning from Maynard to Lowell (I-495) would be
less heavy than from Maynard to Newton (I-90) ?

I don't know yet where I will be staying. The courses that I'll be attending
are in Maynard. I am contemplating staying in Brookline. How long should it
take to get from Brookline to Maynard assuming I can leave Brookline between
7:00 - 7:15 in the morning (what would be the recommended way to drive).

Thanks,

Cb.

From which is it easier to get to Maynard in the AM, from Brookline or from
Lowell (or is it 6 of one half a dozen of the other)?

Thanks,

    Chaim,

It's actually a bit longer in terms of distance from Brookline to
Maynard, but in terms of traffic, it's easier from Brookline-Maynard
than from Lowell. It's traffic on 495 which complicates things.

Another consideration is that in the morning, Brookline-Maynard is
a reverse commute--most of the traffic is going in the other direction.
At 7:00-7:15 you shouldn't hit any heavy traffic. It should take about
    40-45 minutes.

There are several alternate routes out to Maynard. You can take
Route 9, Beacon St., or Commonwealth Ave., whichever you're closest to,
out to Route 128, then go north to Route 20 (exit 26). Take Route 20
east about 1/4 mile to a (well-marked) left turn that takes you to
Route 117. Route 117 goes right into Maynard. (Turn left at Route 27
for Parker St., or right at Sudbury St. to the Mill.) I find this the
most direct and predictable route, but others may have other opinions.

another vote for doing the reverse commute - Brookline to Maynard;
Lowell-Maynard puts you on 495 which can be very unpredictable.

when will you be in town?

The closest to Maynard Orthodox (actually, Chabad) shul is in
Framingham, less 15 min drive from the Mill. You can call Rabbi Lazaros,
508-877-5313, or his wife Sheva, and they will be happy (I know this
family very well) to help you.

Except I don't think they have a daily minyan.

I am not sure about mornings, but they do have Maariv every night
except Fridays, I used to attend those.

I'll be in the area from Sunday, April 10 thru Thursday, April 21.

I still don't know where I'll be staying. I called up the Holiday Inn's 800
number to make a reservation at the Brookline Holiday Inn, but they couldn't
make the reservation for that period.

Thanks,
