1392.0. "Question about Israeli flag" by RDVAX::HABER (supercalifragilisticexpialidocious) Tue Mar 08 1994 14:56

My son is working on his Aleph badge for Cub Scouts, and we're a bit
stuck on the very last section. He's got to draw a picture of the
Israeli flag [not a problem] and then tell what it means to the Israeli
people. I have a feeling that the colors -- white with a blue stripe
-- has something to do with the blue threads in the corner of the white
tallis fringe, but that's all I can come up with right now. I doubt
that our local public libraries will have anything detailed enough to
help explain the design, and the Temple library may be too difficult to
get to tonight. He's turned the rest of the questions in to his
sponsor and needs to just finish this piece by tomorrow afternoon.

    Can someone help? thanks.

If I remember correctly, the stripes are reminiscent of the black/blue
stripes on the "Talit Gadol", The star of David is, well a star of
David. WIth regard to the blue I don't know. An interesting issue is that
the star of David was not originally a jewish symbol but a magical/kaballistic
symbol not directly associated with the jews. A more appropriate symbol would
have been the "Menora" which is in fact part of the offical emblem of the
state of Israel.

Origionally the flag was going to have 12 stars
    representing the 12 tribes.

There were other differences, but I'd have to look them up
    to tell you.

The "Original" flag proposed by Theodore Herzl in his book "Altneuland"
[Old-new-land] which started the new era p[olitical Zionism, i.e.: the
movement, the political movement to return to Zion, to Israel, had
eight stars, representing 8 working hours per day, which were part
     of his utopia.

    Hi
Because of the history of the non religios zionist movement we have the
flag that started with 8 stars as Herzel applied .
The blue/white is a simbol of purity like the sky .
The question of the Menora was problematic both because practical
reasons and that the Menora has a religios conotation that in that
time was dificult to the zionist leaders .
The Flag was the flag of the zionist movement .
The Menora on the Israeli state , symbols the more religios conotation
it comes from the bible .
