1356.0. "Another Digital event scheduled on a Jewish holiday" by DECSIM::DECSIM::GROSS (The bug stops here) Wed Aug 18 1993 04:16

I just got an invitation to a dinner celebration acknowledging those to be
honored by having their names posted on the SEG (Semiconductor Engineering
Group) recognition wall. Well, Digital has done it AGAIN! The event is
scheduled for the evening of September 15 (erev Rosh Hashana).

Since "Valuing Differences" is supposed to be a priority for SEG and
managers are supposed to be measured against progress in this area,
what do you think my chances are for getting this event rescheduled?

1356.1The first of many!!!GRANPA::AFRYDMANWed Aug 18 1993 17:5214
    Why don't you do what I did late year when an important
    digital/Microsoft meeting was scheduled on RH. I wrote a note to the
    person who planned the event explaining the conflict and reminding him
    about the VoD goals of the corporation.

    I got a note back thanking me for bringing the conflict to his
    attention, but "it's hard to reschedule at such a late date"!!and that
    they will take it into consideration "next time"!

    I'm sure you'll get the same response :^)

1356.2I'll keep you postedDECSIM::HAMAN::GROSSThe bug stops hereWed Aug 18 1993 23:188
I've spoken by phone to the person who is supposed to get the RSVPs.
She said she'll consult her boss on this and mentioned something about
the availability of the hotel for the possible dates.

Of course the hotel rooms are available on RH and YK. Not everybody
makes that kind of mistake!

1356.3Look for opportunities to be proactiveRICKS::KRAVITZCaution: I drive like you do!Thu Aug 19 1993 16:289
    Of course, not everyone can do this, but by volunteering to help plan
    an event, you can avoid a scheduling problem.

    My team will hold a dinner in the middle of September. By getting
    involved with the planning, I'm making sure the dinner doesn't fall
    on a chag. Plus, I can ensure that the vegetarian alternative is
    appetizing.

    My manager mentioned in a recent meeting that she would schedule a
    group training opportunity in September. I hastened to give her the
    specific times for our holidays, including leaving early the day
    before. We have several Jewish people in my group, so I'm sure this
    was important to her.

1356.5Send a calendar for all year (and next)RICKS::KRAVITZCaution: I drive like you do!Thu Aug 19 1993 21:507
    Dave,

    Did you send a holiday calendar for the coming year(s) to the person
    responsible for scheduling the recognition event? You might prevent
    Q3's event from occuring on Purim, for instance.

1356.6This one is an annual eventDECSIM::HAMAN::GROSSThe bug stops hereFri Aug 20 1993 00:175
This event is annual. At one time I was on the approval committee.
The upper level of management is at an offsite meeting today, else
I would have had some progress to report.

1356.7Problem solved!DECSIM::HAMAN::GROSSThe bug stops hereThu Aug 26 1993 19:4926
At first I was told I was the only one who complained, therefore they
couldn't do anything about it. Then just a few minutes ago, this came
via MAIL:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

     TO:  RECOGNITION WALL NOMINEES
     	  SEG STAFF

        Last May the SEG Recognition Dinner was scheduled for September
     15. Unfortunately, we missed the fact that although Rosh Hashanah
     is September 16, it actually begins at sundown on the evening prior.

     	SEG is committed to the valuing of differences, therefore, in
     deference to the Jewish members of our organization, the SEG
     Recognition Wall Dinner has been changed to a later date. The new
     date will be Tuesday, September 21, 1993....the time and place are
     unchanged.

     	We sincerely hope that this rescheduling will allow all of our
     Recognition Wall nominees to attend.

     	If you have already confirmed your attendance with Carole Clark,
     please re-confirm for the new date. Thank you.

    I guess this is the "new" digital!! :^)
