1330.0. "HELP ... immediate travel needs to Israel" by SOFBAS::KEENAN () Wed Apr 21 1993 20:59

    Hello,

    We have heard that a very dear, elderly friend in Israel wishes to
    see our family before he dies.

    Our question: are there any options for getting to Israel (within
                  a month or 6 weeks) for less than the air fares
                  we are being quoted ... for instance, we have
                  been told US $1058.00 per person (there are 4 of us!)
                  unitl June 1, when the price goes up to US $1200.00

    Since we are not "blood" relatives, I do not believe we could ask for
    any special "emergency" or "bereavement" rates that some airlines
    may offer.

    I appreciate any help or suggestions. Thank you.

    PS We live in the Boston, Massachusetts area.

1330.1about $600 is a good target!!SQGUK::LEVYThe BloodhoundWed Apr 21 1993 21:5830
    Hi,

    The dollar pound exchange rate is currently about 1.55 dollars to the
    pound. So, $1058 would equal 682.58.

    The charter airlines from London - Tel Aviv are currently charging
    from 189 return including airport tax (10).

    In the newspaper I see adverts to the USA from 199 for Boston and
    New York.

    Adding the two together you get an total of 388 or $601 with a
    possible stop off in London!!

    If you are need accomodation in Israel you will also get the best
    possible prices through the London travel agents who can beat
    any deal offered in Israel using proteksia and all!!!

    My advice is to buy a Jewish paper from one of the Jewish centers.
    New York if you can find one. The paper should have adverts from
    Similar Travel Agents to the London ones who specialize in Israel.

    Otherwise, I can get you the number of a couple of Travel Agents in
    London and maybe you can book through them.

1330.2also consider El AL SQGUK::LEVYThe BloodhoundWed Apr 21 1993 22:087
    Hi,

    Just to add, I have been told by a friend who will be traveling with
    2 children that it is cheaper to fly El Al as the reduction in child
    fare more than makes up for the extra that an adult is charged.

Go to the Israel Book Shop (410 Harvard St, Brookline) and pick up a copy of
The Jewish Press. There should be ads for travel agents in NY who have good
rates.
1330.4Try the Jerusalem Post, too.....SQUEST::SQUEST::WESTThu Apr 22 1993 16:559
    The Jerusalem Post also has advertisements on fares from NY to Tel Aviv
    for $699 or so..... I think two different travel agents are mentioned.

    I dont know what restrictions apply.

    If you want info, send mail to me and I will send you the phone numbers
    (dont have them here with me)

    Another place to look for low prices: the travel advertisement section
    of The Village Voice.
