Although this has nothing to do with the traditional BAGELS issues, I thought I would share with you the importance of today in Hawaiian Kingdom (yes, it is the only State in the Union which was once a Kingdom and the only one whose state flag still includes the Union Jack). Today marks the 100th Anniversary of the illegal overthrow of Queen Liliukalani by 5 American buisinessmen with the help of the USMC. The Anniversary has renewed calls for Hawaiian sovreignity, a redistribution of lands to Hawaiians which comprise the most disadvanged population in the State. The title of my note (Malama Ka'aina) means protect the land in Hawaiian and is one of the rallying cries. Numerous events are planned throughout the State. Hawaii No Ka Oi greg

Hey Greg, you got the 1300 note. Quite a snarf. Way to go! On your topic, juding by the success <not> of the advocates of Puerto Rican statehood (Puerto Rico is a de-dacto colony, imho), and by the success <not> in achieving mainland Native American sovereignty, I wouldn't expect the native Hawaiins to have much better luck. Have you considered posting this in the Native American notes file? Should generate some interest there. My awareness of and sensitivity to Native American claims often falls into conflict with my Jewish appreciation of the freedom we've gained here. I hear that stirring song "Coming to America" or I vote, and I weep in gratitude to this nation for providing us a safe haven and unprecedented freedom. Then I consider the forcible land grab of this continent, and the genocide of Native peoples, and I know that justice is still not served. At the same time, I know we can't just roll back the massive colonization and return things to the way they were. Surely we as a country (and Canada, too) can do a better job of remedying the Native American losses. What should the Jewish role be in this issue? Can we make a unique contribution? How do other American Jews handle these two points of view? L | |||||

Stayed up all night monitoring the writes to get 1300! 8^) No I dodn't mean to start a controversy, I simply thought some of our devoted readers might be interested to read of events which may be only of peripheral interest given the geographical spread this notesfile reaches. AND since I seem to be the only contributor from Hawaii (I'm in Europe at this time for a few weeks) items of burning interest might also perhaps be of passing interest to Bagelers. Not to mention the fact that when we become independant I expect to be the "eminence grise" of the new regime 8^) |
