1224.0. ""Living a Jewish Life": May 17 8 pm, Acton MA" by TNPUBS::STEINHART (Laura) Fri May 15 1992 18:51
"Being a Jew today means making choices - choices that include the
practice of religion, but go beyond into everyday life. As author,
journalist and Boston Globe columnist Anita Diamant notes, 'Judaism is
a way of being in the world.'
"Judaism, Diamant said, 'blurs the line' between secular and sacred.'
"Diamant, whose most recent book is Living_A_Jewish_Life, co-authored
with Howard Cooper, will be talking about making those choices, both in
at-home explicitly Jewish traditions and observances, and in a broader
sense, in the world in which we live.'
"She will be speaking at 8 p.m., May 17, at Congregation Beth Elohim in
Acton.'
"The choice is where to start and how to start living a Jewish life.
For some, this may mean starting with nothing while others may be
expanding upon a firm foundation.'
"For modern Jews, Diamant said, 'almost every choice you make an have a
Jewish dimension.' Even seemingly 'value-neutral' choices in everyday
life, like the decision to give blood, can have a Jewish response.
Doing a good deed and providing a life-giving contribution for someone
else are fundamental to Jewish observance. Recycling or giving money
to charities - even a decision on a political candidate - are daily
choices that can be part of a Jewish world view.'
"The choices are many and the door is wide open and welcoming to
everyone who wants to enter into an exploration of Jewish life, says
Diamant.'
"For more information about the lecture, which is free and open to the
public, call the synagogue office at (508) 263-3061."
