1200.0. "National Holocaust Remembrance Week" by TOOK::M_ELLISON () Thu Apr 02 1992 20:12

I was chatting with some folks recently and someone mentioned that the
last week in April is national Holocaust remembrance week.

We breifly discussed what we, our family, and our friends remember and
associate with the Holocaust. I've looked through this conference, and
noticed that notes 48, 712, and 926 deal with this issue in varying degrees,
but these notes have not been active for some time now.

I've started this topic in order to provide a forum for continued discussion.

What do you remember about the Holocaust? What experiences can you
relate? What stories were passed down to you by parents and relatives?
What books, films, plays, programs, or music are you aware of that provides
an accurate portrayal of issues of the Holocaust?

I realize that many of us sometimes find it difficult to even acknowledge
such a trying time in Jewish history. If any reader would like to contribute,
yet remain anonymous, please send email to me (TOOK::M_ELLISON), and I
will add a reply to this topic for you.

Please forward this message along to anyone who might have a story to tell.

Much Holocaust information is available through the internet newsgroup
alt.revisionsim. (thanks to Colin Benson, note 1206.42 for the tip).

Although there is significant amount of revisionism in this newsgroup,
there is also a significant amount of factual information concerning
the Holocaust. It appears easy to separate the fact from the fiction.

Subj:	Re: extensive bibliography dealing with the Holocaust

|> Please send to [email protected]

A partial bibliographic reference for those wishing to learn more about the
Holocaust and the period within which it occured follows.

I claim all spelling errors as my own, and regret that foreign accent marks
could not be reproduced here as they should be. Umlauts have been replaced
by letter pairs - i.e. umlaut-O becomes "oe" and umlaut-A becomes "ae".

This file will be sent to you in two parts. The second part contains the
UCSD Library listing of 550 citations, many of which are duplicated here.
In time, I will combine them.

Finally, I apologize for the brevity of this list. As Vera Laska, a prisoner
at Auschwitz, and later a member of the Czechoslovak War Crimes
Investigation Team, notes, there are over TEN THOUSAND known publications on
Auschwitz alone. knm.

"WOMEN IN THE RESISTANCE AND IN THE HOLOCAUST: THE VOICES OF EYEWITNESSES"
Edited (and with introduction) by Vera Laska. Greenwood Press, Westport &
London, 1983. LOC 82-12018, ISBN 0-313-23457-4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vara Laska on researching the Holocaust:

Yad Vashem Martyrs' and Heroes' Memorial Authority in Jerusalem is a
depository of documents and memoirs on the Holocaust, mostly in German,
Hebrew and Yiddish. It also issues the Yad Vashem Studies on the European
Jewish Catastrophe and Resistance.

The Centre de Documentation Juive Contemporaine in Paris and the Wiener
Library in London are major sources of information. The Wiener Library's
catalogue series published a bibliography, Persecution and Resistance Under
the Nazis (London: Valentine, Mitchell, 1960). ...

In the United States the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research (1048 Fifth
Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10028) houses several collections of ghetto documents
and related primary source materials. It publishes the YIVO Annual of Jewish
Social Science. Since 1960, Yad Vashem and the YIVO Institute have been
engaged in preparing a multivolume bibliographical series on the Holocaust;
one of the volumes, Jacob Robinson, ed., The Holocaust and After: Sources
and Literature in English (Jerusalem: Israel University Press, 1973) is most
helpful.

The Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith (823 United Nations Plaza, New
York, N.Y. 10017) supplies teaching materials at reasonable prices, for
instance The Record - The Holocaust in History, 1933-1945, published in
cooperation with the National Council for Social Studies in 1978.

The Library of Congress and the National Archives are rich sources for
researchers, containing among others the transcripts of war crime trials.
This in itself is an immense documentation; for instance, the Nuremberg
Doctors' Trial of twenty-three defendents alone takes up 11,538 pages in
nineteen volumes. Indexes can be consulted about various concentration
camps. ...

"The heavy smoke from the crematory building is said to be visible over
Hadamar every day... At full capacity [they] smoked day and night. Locks of
hair went up through the chimneys and landed in the street." [From Nazi
documents critical of "mistakes" made at medical killing centres]

1200.7Excerpts from bibliographyTOOK::M_ELLISONFri Aug 07 1992 01:1515
I have an extensive set of excerpts from the bibliography I posted in the
previous note.

These have been placed into a file with world access at:

	TOOK::USER$64:[M_ELLISON.PUB.JVOD]ALT.REVISIONISM

This is a *large* file, containing 1000 blocks. Since Friday 7 August is my
last day with Digital, I would appreciate it if interested folks would copy
this file and make it available, and post an update to this note.

Regards,

Mark

There is a copy in DDIF::CALENDAR$:[KITS]. We are not infinitely long on
disk space; so it would make sense if an alternate copy were made available
elsewhere.
