1181.0. "Addition to note 173" by IAMOK::SAMSON () Thu Mar 05 1992 20:22

    Hi,

    This is the original noter. Thanks for all those responses!

    It so happens that though we are not members (due to reasons I'd rather
    not mention here; since that will be a topic for discussion in itself!)
    we are semi-religious and try our best to teach the children about
    religion at home i.e. we do Friday prayers, try to follow Jewish dietary
    laws (but are not strictly Kosher), discuss religion and the significance
    of a bar-mitzvah, read the Bible etc.

    The to-be bar mitzvah child was taking private Hebrew lessons (not
    religious) since he is interested in learning the language. I myself
    lived in Israel for 2 years, but do not know Hebrew well enough to teach
    him. To make a long story short - we are not totally devoid of religion.

    I guess I should have posed my original question differently ....

    	.	Do we have to be members to perform a child's
    		bar-mitzvah in a synagogue? If we do, could the child's
    		grand-parents "host" the ceremony?

    	.	Couldn't the child be trained privately to read his part of
    		the haftorah?

    	.	One of the options we are also looking into is to do his
    		bar-mitzvah in Israel.

    More imput would be welcome.

1181.1addition to note 1173IAMOK::SAMSONFri Mar 06 1992 20:027
    Hi,

    Sorry about the typo. Note 1181 is an addition to note 1173... I hit
    the wrong key and now I do not know how to move this note. Help.

    Hi,

    1. I know that there are tapes from which one can learn the Haftara.
    The Israeli Book Store might know about them.

    2. Celebrating the Bar-Mitzva in Jerusalem next to the Wailing Wall,
    will be an unforgetful experience. Maybe someone from DEC Israel can
    help you in finding a Rabbi for the ceremony.

    Good Luck,
    GL
1181.3also at MasadaCADSYS::HECTOR::RICHARDSONMon Mar 09 1992 18:3512
    It is also possible to celebrate the bar mitzvah at Masada - there were
    three or four groups there when we visited there (June of '83). I
    don't know how you organize this, though - at least one the families
    had flown to Israel with their own Torah from New York for the
    occasion. I think people do this rather than going to the Wall because
    the women of the family can participate - the partition at the Wall is
    too tall for even me to see over, and I remember seeing a lot of women
    and girls climbing up on it (which I am sure is strictly frowned on,
    but no one seemed to be trying too hard to stop them) in order to catch
    glimpses of their sons/brothers.

Charlotte and I talk eye-to-eye and I'm 6 ft tall. If _she_ can't see over
the crowd, few women can.

I also know of families doing it at Masada.
