1174.0. ""El Shaddai" - Biblical Hebrew translation" by XANADU::RECKARD (Jon Reckard, 381-0878, ZKO3-2/T63) Wed Feb 19 1992 21:49

    A song written by Michael Card goes like this:

    El Shaddai, El Shaddai, El Elyona Adonai
    Age to age you're still the same By the power of The Name.
    El Shaddai, El Shaddai, er kamka na Adonai
    We will praise and lift you high, El Shaddai.

    I'd like translations and improved transliterations/pronunciations of
    the first and (especially) third lines. The Hebrew "words" I've
    rendered above are merely copies of the text as handwritten for me.

    My uncertain understanding so far is:
    	El              God
    	Shaddai         Almighty
        Elyona          Most High
        Adonai          Lord

    I'm guessing there might be a "kana" in the third line - "to name, give
    a name to". (This much I've gathered from an On-Line Bible tool which
    includes a concordance and (transliterated) lexicon.)

1174.1Clarification and disclaimerXANADU::RECKARDJon Reckard, 381-0878, ZKO3-2/T63Wed Feb 19 1992 21:566
    Clarification: I'm aware of the not-so-good transliterations. (This
    is, after all, one person's attempt to spell in English what he thinks
    he heard someone sing.) The question I asked in .0 might better be:
    What do you *think* is being said here?
