AGENDA:
* Introductions
* What shall we do around Pesach this year?
Ideas have included circulating a calendar of dates, sponsoring a
presentation or discussion of Pesach, sponsoring a model Seder, and
speaking to the cafeteria managers about providing kosher matzot.
Please bring your ideas and initiative. We need to move quickly
if we choose to implement any programming. It is now 7 weeks to the
first seder on April 17.

| Personally, I don't plan to ask for more than putting an opened
box of Kosher-le-Pesach matzot (and maybe a can of macaroons)
on a new paper doily. What happens after that is up to the
individual who takes the matzot or macaroon. (Our caf has disposable
plates and knives, if people want them.)
Some people might want to ask for prepared foods. They certainly won't
be billed as kosher, and anyone who keeps kosher won't eat them anyway.
It's not a priority for me, but if someone strongly wants to take it
on, I'm not going to stand in their way.
Let's not go down THIS rat hole, ok? Thanks.

VoD Planning Meeting About Jewish Concerns
March 10, 1992, 12 pm
1. Next meeting. Tuesday, March 17 at 5:30 pm at Edward Hale CR,
LKG1 (King St., Littleton MA). Agenda: Continue Pesach planning.
20 people attended the March 10 meeting.
2. Calendar. The group critiqued it and discussed ways to
distribute it. Laura will incorporate suggested changes and
distribute the next draft to the attendees for comments.
3. Cafeterias and Pesach. Doug St. Clair will draft guidelines for
the provision of kosher matzot and other suitable packaged foods. The
four volunteer site contacts (LKG, ACO, PKO and MKO) will use the
guidelines in speaking to the cafeteria managers. If volunteers want
to speak to caf managers at other sites, please get guidelines from
Doug (SAINT::STCLAIR).
4. Corporate VoD. We will seek support for distributing the
calendar, communicating with cafeteria management companies, and
other needs that arise, and will invite a representative to
one of our meetings.
5. Educational programming for Pesach. The group agreed to hold any
programs in a conference room rather than the cafeteria. Ideas
included a model seder, videos, a presentation, and setting out a seder
plate for viewing. This discussion will continue at the next meeting.

Other interests include Israel in the news, book discussions, and
planning an outing for the group (e.g., a play of Jewish Interest such
as Yom Kipper in DaNang at the JCC in Newton or Shayna Meidel at the
New Repertory Theater also in Newton).
4. We may dedicate at least one meeting to each of the topics of
interest, and we may designate someone from the group with a special
interest in that topic to run the meeting.
5. For the next meeting, Sue recommends that we spend half the time in
developing a schedule for discussion topics and discussion leaders, and
use the rest of the time on an open discussion of "Jewish Identity -

1168.13 | the matzah brigade scores a win! | TNPUBS::STEINHART | Laura | Wed Apr 01 1992 22:45 | 67 |
| I have just received a memo from the U.S. Diversity people that
95% of New England cafeterias will serve matzah during Passover the
week of April 20th! (A small percentage of Vermont sites may not
be involved.)
We will explore both making this a permanent arrangement and extending
it next year to other US regions.
I provide you the following guidelines so you can use them at sites
outside New England. If you speak to the cafeteria manager at your
work site, I recommend that you present this as an profit opportunity
to sell a new type of food that week, and as an opportunity to build
customer goodwill.
The last paragraph refers to an information sheet. Please contact me
for copies (I should have them soon) or provide your own.
Guidelines for the Sale of Passover Foods
in Digital Equipment Company Cafeterias
HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
The Jewish holy days of Passover (Pesach) commemorate the
Jewish people's exodus from ancient Egypt. In 1992,
Passover occurs from April 18th to April 25th.
During Passover Jews do not eat any leavened bread. They
eat specially prepared matzah (plural - matzot), a thin
cracker-like wheat product. Passover matzah must be
prepared under special restrictions. Jewish religious law
requires that Jews be very strict in their observance of the
prohibition against bread and other leavened food. Not even
a crumb of bread is allowed.
GUIDELINES
In selecting matzah and any other Passover food, choose any
package which has a kosher mark and is specifically labelled
"Kosher for Passover". They can be found in a special
section in most large supermarkets in April.
Two of the most common Kosher marks are either or both of
the letters K and U. Kosher foods, which conform to the
Jewish dietary laws, are prepared under strict supervision
by several organizations who place a kosher mark of
approval.
At Passover some Jews will not eat matzah unless it is made
solely of of flour and water; this should be available
daily. You can supplement this with egg matzah for variety.
To serve matzot and other kosher-for-Passover packaged foods
such as macaroons, place the open package on a new paper
tablecloth or placemat. Place the Passover food on a table
or counter well separated from other foods and not
underneath bread or other prepared foods which may fall onto
it. If you provide serving utensils, use new disposable
plastic each day.
If you wish to create an attractive display with a vase of
flowers and copies of our information sheet for cafeteria
customers, it would be appreciated.
Thank you for helping us to observe our holy days,
The Jewish VoD group

1168.15 | Israeli volunteers wanted for April 16th | TNPUBS::STEINHART | Laura | Tue Apr 07 1992 18:07 | 29 |
| Please reply to TOOK::L_GROSSMAN
On Thursday, April 16th, from 11:00 am -3:00 pm Eastern Standard Time,
the constituency group will sponsor a Passover educational event for
both Jews and the general Digital public in Littleton, Massachusetts.
As one component of the event, we would like to emphasize the
importance and immediacy of Israel. After all, the Hebrews' goal in
leaving Egypt was to return to Eretz Yisrael. And many refugees are
gong to Israel now from Ethipia, USSR/CIS, and other countries. We
want to personalize the US-Israel relationship.
We have arranged to have a VT terminal at the event, tied into a VAX
with an email account. We are seeking Israeli volunteers to respond to
mail while the event is running. I'm aware that this is during the
busiest pre-Pesach time, so I appreciate whatever you can do.
If you can be at "the other end of the line" during the event, please
notify Larry (took::l_grossman). Please send a short biographical
note that we can post near the terminal, so people know to whom they
are talking. People will be curious about where you live, if you have
any kids, what kind of work you do, and any other details that will
personalize you. If you can send Larry any snapshots by the 16th, that
would be great.
It would also be nice to have a 1 or 2 page write-up about DEC Israel -
what you as an organization do over there, what you contibute to Digital.
Thanks!!

PASSOVER: EXODUS TO FREEDOM, THEN AND NOW
A Cultural Event Sponsored by the Jewish Constituency Group
DATE: Thursday, April 16
TIME: 11 AM to 3 PM
12 PM: Food demonstration
PLACE: Nathaniel Hawthorne Conf. Rm.
LKG1-2, King St., Littleton, MA
Have you ever wondered about the significance of Passover?
Come to this open house and learn about the holiday which
celebrates the Hebrews' freedom from bondage in Egypt, and the
creation of the Jewish nation.
Come discover how the meaning lives today in the massive airlift of
Ethiopian Jews to Israel, and the freedom of emigration for Jews
previously restricted within the Soviet Union.
Come taste matzah, the most important Passover food, with typical
toppings and beverages. At 12 PM, watch us prepare a sweet spread
made of apples, using both European and Middle Eastern recipes.
We will continuously show a video about the dramatic airlift from
Ethiopia, display pictures, ritual objects and books, and answer
your questions.

matzah (straight from the box) during Pesach this year.

sheet titled "Matzah" which cafeteria managers may photocopy and place
beside the food.

1168.18 | the cafeteria here wants to be helpful | CADSYS::HECTOR::RICHARDSON | | Mon Apr 13 1992 20:18 | 17 |
| I was rather pleased a few days ago when someone from personnel came to
talk to me about a committee he had been appointed to, along with some
employees of the cafeteria contractor, about what to provide for
Passover. I had to admit that I have never eaten in the cafeteria in
the 6 1/2 years I have worked in this building, since I always
brown-bag-it anyhow, and so wouldn't be of much help. I sent him off
to talk to some of the other Jewish people in the department who I
think might eat the cafeteria food. I did tell him that some people
would probably appreciate the gesture if matzohs were provided, and if
there were non-kitnios vegetable alternatives available. Since we keep
a fairly strict holiday, I'm not going to benefit no matter what they
do, but I did think it was a nice gesture, since I do know a lot of
people who simply do not eat obvious "bread" during the holiday, or
avoid both bread and legumes, without actually keeping a strict
holiday.

1168.20 | Status report | TNPUBS::STEINHART | Laura | Mon May 04 1992 22:52 | 44 |
| OLD BUSINESS
1. The April 16 Passover: Exodus to Freedom event was highly
successful. Laura will pull together a documentation package to ease
repeating this event at any site next year.
2. The New England cafeterias served matzah during Passover (April
20-24). Some sites provided special menus. Several site contacts
reported that the matzah table looked severe. Laura will contact
the Digital purchasing manager who made the arrangements, with a
goal of laying the groundwork for 1993.
3. The Stow VoD committee sponsored a Holocaust Memorial photo exhibit
and video on April 30. Can anyone report on attendance and overall
impressions of this event?
4. We will have a listing in the US Diversity Handbook, with a
mailstop and a VAXmail account.
5. We need a volunteer to research posting the Holy Days Calendar in
VTX. Laura has several names of contacts.
6. The PKO (Parker St., Maynard) VoD committee is planning to rename
conference rooms using VoD themes. We will forward them one or more
suggestions for Jewish names. They will resolve this during Q3.
7. The L_CHAIM notes file is up and ready for business. Please use
L_CHAIM to discuss our plans, such as the PKO room name proposals and
most importantly, priorities for the rest of 1992. Contact Doug
(SAINT::STCLAIR) or Caryn (VERGA::STEWART) to register and for user
assistance.
NEW BUSINESS
8. David Srebnick and David Ofsevit will work together to schedule,
prepare, and present a speech about Jewish culture for the Marlboro
area VoD committee, probably in Q3. The Marlboro committee will
handle all logistics.
9. Dr. Sherry Israel of the Hornstein Program of Brandeis University
has kindly offered to lead an interactive presentation on Tuesday, June
16. She is a specialist on Boston-area demographics and will relate
demographics and community structure to our lives. We need a committee
to plan publicity, registration, and other logistics for this event.

| WHAT TO DO NEXT:
Thanks for all your suggestions for the conference room naming at PKO.
Please make your final recommendations in note 11 of the L_CHAIM notes
file, using REPLY. Do not send me mail. Contact Doug (SAINT::STCLAIR)
or Caryn (VERGA::STEWART) to get access or assistance.
We don't have to limit our recommendation to one name, but I do want to
supply supporting biographical or historical information for each name
we send. Please enter this information in note 11. This will further
our discussion and help people decide.
SUGGESTED NAMES:
The names cited most often were Golda Meir, followed by Albert Einstein
and Moses Maimonedes. The following names received 2 or more
recommendations:
Asimov, Isaac Freud, Sigmund
Begin, Menachem Herzl, Theodore
Ben Gurion, David Hillel
Berlin, Irving Jerusalem
Bernstein, Leonard Maimonedes, Moses
Brandeis, Louis Masada
Einstein, Albert Meir, Golda
Frankfurter, Felix Shalom
Singer, Isaac Balshevis
There was one persuasive argument for Abraham Joshua Heschel. I quote,
"In addition to being a modern scholar, he was also heavily involved in
the black civil rights movement with Martin Luther King."
The PKO committee reports the following discussion:
"One of the suggested names is "Holocaust Remembrance." This stirred
up a lengthy debate, primarily between the two members of staff who are
Jewish. One felt it should not be used due to the painfully emotional
memories it may stir up for people; the other felt it is critical that
we not forget the event (sweep in under the rug) and the presecution of
the Jews and other "undesireables" (as they were called in WWII
Germany). Both held very strong opinions. We resolved as a group to
solicit feedback about the use of this name from an internal Jewish
contituency or focus group.'
"Laura, would you mind raising this issue with your group. Additional
input from the DEC Jewish community would be very helpful in our
decision-making process on this particular name."
MY THOUGHTS:
I personally believe that Albert Einstein is our best choice, if we
were to submit only one name, not only for his scientific achievements,
but for his humanitarianism and support for the Jewish people after
World War II. From a statement read at the unveiling at the Memorial
for the Battle of the Warsaw Ghetto; Warsaw, April 19, 1948:
"The monument before which you have gathered today was built to stand
as a concrete symbol of our grief over the irreparable loss our
martyred Jewish nation has suffered. It shall also serve as a reminder
for us who have survived to remain loyal to our people and to the moral
principles cherished by our fathers. Only through such loyalty may we
hope to survive this age of moral decay.'
"Let us clearly recognize and never forget this: That mutual
cooperation and the furtherance of living ties between the Jews of all
lands is our sole physical and moral protection in the present
situation. But for the future our hope lies in overcoming the general
moral abasement which today gravely menaces the very existence of
mankind. Let us labor with all our powers, however feeble, to the end
that mankind recover from its present moral degradation and gain a new
vitaility and a new strength in its striving for right and justice as
well as for a harmonious society."
(Thanks to Jon for providing this quotation.)
Remember: Post all responses as replies to note 11 in L_CHAIM. I
can't handle another onslaught of EMAIL (big deadline is looming),
though I dearly appreciated and enjoyed all your memos last time.

4. Provide support for Jews (including intermarrieds) prior to
Christmas. We may offer volunteer labor at Christmas, either to
cover people's jobs within Digital, or outside in the community.
OLD BUSINESS
1. SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS. Sue Goldman reported on this and news of
related organizations including VoD boards and constituency groups.
2. CALENDAR. We discussed how to more widely distribute it and raise
awareness to people remember to check it before scheduling important
events. Laura and Sue will meet with Dave Crimmin to discuss
distribution within NaC. Elena Aschenasi is researching putting it in
VTX.
3. CAFETERIAS. 95% of New England cafeterias served matzah during
Pesach. Laura will close the loop with the purchasing manager. Steve
Denker will collect Jewish-style recipes and place them in L_CHAIM for
any site committee to share.
4. PASSOVER EVENT. Laura will write a summary of impressions
following event and create a packet of this and worksheets.
5. OGO HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL EVENT. Had poor attendance. We will
probably want some commemoration on our events list for 1993.
6. PKO CONFERENCE ROOM NAME. With writers' permissions, the contents
of note 11 will be sent to the PKO personnel rep soon. Please provide
a short biography of anyone whom you recommend.
7. L_CHAIM NOTES FILE. Is on line, moderators Doug SAINT::STCLAIR
and Caryn VERGA::STEWART.
8. DISTRIBUTION LIST. Includes 100 names from around the US.
9. ISRAEL FESTIVAL IN ANDOVER MAY 31. Ethy (SOLVIT::GROSS) requests
assistance with setting up and staffing a booth about Digital Equipment
(DEC Ltd.) in Israel for this Federation-sponsored event.
10. US DIVERISTY HANDBOOK. Laura submitted an account name and an
interoffice mailstop for the constituency group.
NEW BUSINESS
1. PRESENTATION IN MARLBORO. David Srebnick and David Ofsevit will
provide a presentation sponsored by the Marlboro area VoD committee,
date to be arranged. They will present highlights of Jewish observance
and answer questions.
2. DEMOGRAPHICS WORKSHOP ON JUNE 16. Janet Cardillo is organizing a
June 16 workshop on Jewish American demographics with Dr. Sherry Israel
of Brandeis University. It will begin in the Harbor CR, LKG2-1 at
12:00 p.m. with a lecture and continue in three breakout rooms.
3. NAC FUNDS. Sue reported that NaC funds are available for VoD use.
Requests go to Dave Crimmin and projects will be selected from these
lists by Mike Thurk. There are no additional guidelines. Agenda topic
for next meeting is to put together a project list which can use
funding and submit it to Dave.
4. MAYNARD STARTUP GROUP. Caryn and Doug met with Kendra Theriault
about starting a constituency group in Maynard. We will work out the
relationships between Maynard and Littleton groups, and between local
groups and an umbrella organization.
5. MISSION STATEMENT. Sue will develop a draft with the assistance of
David Srebnick, Jon Ruby, Janet, and Laura, to be ready by the July
meeting.
6. KOSHER TURKEYS. David Jacobs will research and report on this
issue, and will contact David Srebnick who has information.
PRIORITIES
1. SUMMARY OF PERSONAL PRIORITIES. Laura provided a summary. The
leading priority appears to be education/awareness coupled with
self-discovery, such as the planned demography workshop. The second
priority seems to be education/awareness coupled with dealing with
issues around being Jewish at Digital.
2. HISPANIC CONSTITUENCY GROUP. Sue reported on its structure and
activities, providing a broader perspective on being a more attractive
employer, business partnerships, and community support.
3. BECOMING A MORE ATTRACTIVE EMPLOYER. Some suggestions include:
a. Support those who are shomer Shabbat; b. Indicate support for Jewish
employees during employment interviews; c. Increase both overall
tolerance for participation in constituency groups, and tolerance for
Jewish constituency group participation in particular; d. Support
openly orthodox Jews.

See also note 1168.14.
A number of people have had difficult in accessing L_CHAIM Notes
Conference because they were registered with a cluster 'alias' and not
a node 'name'.
Please check before you send a e-mail to register and make sure we have a
node name (or two) for you to use for access. If you don't understand
the difference (and probably care less) don't let it bother you ask
your system manager and send us the information they give you.
Tell the system manager that you are requesting access to a notes file
that is set up for 'members only' and that you need to know which
node(s) you will be accessing it from.
