1153.0. "Who are the "activist" deportees?" by SUBWAY::STEINBERG (Anacronym: an outdated acronym) Wed Jan 08 1992 01:43
I thought this information was fairly enlightening. The only
depiction of the deportees I've seen or heard has been,
"Palestinian activists." BTW, we're still waiting to
see UN condemnation of Kuwait for mass deportations
of "Palestinians" (yes, I object to the very term as
applied exclusively to Arabs), not to mention hunting
them down and shooting them in the streets of Kuwait
City (I have heard first-hand accounts of the latter
from Desert Stormers).

| These "activitsts" may be terrible people, but it does not matter. If
they are belived to have committed crimes they should be tried in a
proper court, and if found guilty they should be jailed (or whatever
the penalties are).
Summary deportation merely plays into the hands of the people on both
sides who are against the peace talks, who are, in effect colluding to
make sure the talks are not successful.

| .1> Summary deportation ...
It is incorrect to describe the deportations as "summary". Those facing
deportation may appeal to military tribunals, and all 12 (if I'm not mistaken)
of these men have chosen to do so. The tribunals, one for the West Bank
plaintiffs and one for those from Gaza, will make recommendations to the
appropriate military commanders. If the decision goes against them, the
plaintiffs then have the option of appealing to the Israeli Supreme Court.
I think that this compares favorably to military judicial procedures followed
by other countries. Whether or not one thinks that the deportations are a good
idea, they definitely are not "summary".

Do you believe that the "strong condemnation" has anything to do
with the U.N.'s concern for "criminal law?" Fascinating how that
concern just happens to manifest itself only in the case of one
particular country. BTW, what about the Jewish _kedoshim_ who
were killed? Mum's the word - publicly. Privately - jubilation.
Interesting how you chose to completely ignore my comments about
Kuwait. Is that because it's "expected" from Arabs? Sounds like
racism to me.
