1138.0. "I've been rightsized - Now's my chance..." by AZUR::HALDANE (Typos to the Trade) Mon Dec 02 1991 13:41

	Mainly to Israelis:

I'm leaving Digital (in Valbonne, France) on 12th December and,
after about three weeks with my family and friends in London, I'll
be at a loose end until I can find another job. (I'm a technical
writer/editor, but can turn my hand to most things that don't
require big muscles or a lot of dexterity.)

What I'd like to know is: would it be possible to work on a kibbutz
in exchange for board and lodging, and a little pocket money? Is
there any age limit for this, regardless of how fit one is (well,
I'm somewhat overweight, but hard work would rectify that!)?

Although I'd love to work on a kibbutz, I'd be willing to do any
kind of work that would pay for my keep, and perhaps leave me
enough over to pay for my fare back to France. I'd intend to stay
for six months, but, who knows, it could be for ever.

My mother is Jewish, and I have a British passport and a French
resident's permit, so I shouldn't have much difficulty being
allowed into Israel. What about my cat and my little car?

I'd be grateful for any advice or information you can give me, and
it would be marvellous if you could pass on my name and address to
agencies or individuals who could let me have more details of how
	to arrange something quite quickly.

There are a number of kibbutzim that accept foreign volunteers, and the Israeli
Embassy or Consulate should be able to get you information about them.

.0>	What about my cat ...

Again, the authorities should be able to tell you the rules. But you'd
probably be best off to leave the cat with friends. (That's what I'd do with
mine in that situation.)

.0>	... and my little car?

It is possible to bring a car into the country, as a tourist, without paying
the horrendous taxes normally associated with owning a car over here. But
depending on what you'll be doing here, you might decide that a car would be
more trouble than it's worth. Again, you should check with the Embassy or
Consulate about the rules.

Ruth,

Volunteering on a kibbutz should be a simple process (at least it used to
be). You can get the necessary information from the Israeli consulate
(either in Nice or Marseilles). They should also be Shaliach (emissary)
from the Kibbutz Aliyah Desk in the embassy in Paris who can help you.

Pocket money is exactly the cash payments that you receive as a volunteer,
no more, no less.

I wouldn't advise taking your car either.
