1106.0. "Jewish calendar" by ASSON::KLEIN (My life is based on a true story) Wed Sep 25 1991 18:32

Moed Tov,

I am looking for some algorithms to create my own jewish calendar program.
I have several versions running on PC but I do not have the sources and would
like to run it on VMS & Ultrix.

I am looking for :
 - the conversions between loazit to jewish and jewish to loazit date,
 - the calculation of the weekly parashiots for both Israel & the Gola,
 - the calculation of the different timings ("kriat shema","minh'a guedola",
"plag minh'a", "etset hakoravim"...) for any given latitude & longitude.

If you have any of these algorithms or the C version of a jewish calendar
posted -may be a year ago- on the Usenet jewish conference, I will appreciate
your help

Thank you & have a nice Hol Hamoed.

(Here in Boston, Simcha Beth Hachova is done on a very big scale!!! We have
heavy rain since midnight -probably more than 3 inches now -: I missed my
jerusalemite hol hamoed...)

/Philippe

I have Ultrix/Unix code that will do most of those tricks.
    Send mail.

I have some portable code that will do some of it. I can get sunrise and sunset
(astronomical and observed) for the locations. It will tell you the date
conversion (including time of day corrections when checkin the jewish date for
the current time). I never added the specific timings. I have source and
some insight into the programming since I did the merge of hcal and planets
to get it to work.

I also have some C sources that I pulled off the USENET many moons ago.

I had it run successfully run under VMS. If you want the sources please
    send mail.

Monty: Do I have to come this far to find you have what I am looking for?

A customer of mine, (the 2nd largest "petrol" company in Israel) is looking
for some code that would permit them to place the Jewish holydays against the
Gregorian calendar, in order to serve their Human Resources Systems.

Please froward it to me.

I am using the programs HCAL and HDATE.

I got it from the TOOLSHED. It works very nice. Comes with the
algorithm and with C source code.

I have taken the C sources from the toolshed and converted
the algorithms to Apple-II Basic. And, yes, it works great.
But it doesn't provide candle-lighting times (or other times
such as begining/ending of fasts) and it doesn't give the
weekly Torah readings. These are available for IBM-compatibles.
I'd love to see the sources so we could have DEC and Apple
versions too.

I added sunrise/sunset times to hcal, but haven't distributed it because
there are some problems (you need to know latitude, longitude, and the
current timezone offset, and I couldn't figure out how to handle daylight
savings time). Also, I wasn't certain about the Jewish calendar definition
of "sunrise" or "sunset" (there are three definitions: civil, navigational,
and astronomical).

Contact me directly if you'd like the code.

Martin.
ps: I got the code off of Usenet, so it's public domain as far as I'm
concerned.
