1087.0. "Junior World Cycling Championships " by ALEXI::MANDRACCIA () Tue Jun 25 1991 22:05

	My name is Steve Mandraccia and I am going to be the designated
	team host for the Israeli cycling teams for the Junior World
	Championships here in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I am entering
	this not for two purposes; one to find out if anyone is related to
	or friends with any of the team members and second to provide
	information on race results or how the team is getting along in a
	high altitude climate.

	Unfortunately, I do not yet know any of the names of the kids
	participating, but will post when I find out. I could also use
	a little assistance in determining when the team is actually
	arriving. The people handing the organizing of all foreign teams
	do not have any information on the Israeli team. I was hoping to
	be able to welcome them at the airport when they arrived. If someone
	is willing to contact the Isreali Cycling Federation in Tel Aviv
	located at 4 Marmorek st. telephone 03-5616262 and speak with
	Yadin Machness, I would greatly appreciate it. If there is concern
	about posting the flight schedule, plese use mail at either node
	alexi::mandraccia or ssag::mandraccia.

	Thank you

	Steve

1087.2Israeli Cycling Team is in Colorado SpringsALEXI::MANDRACCIAFri Jun 28 1991 08:078
    The Israreli Cycling team arrived in Colorado Springs this evening.
    It took them 24 hours to get here, but they are in good spirits and
    eager to start training at altitude. They are getting a good nights
    rest tonight and will get started tomorrow. I am very much looking
    forward to spending time with them and making sure their visit here
    is a good one.

1087.3TV/VCR Format question.ALEXI::MANDRACCIAMon Jul 08 1991 08:488

    	A couple of the boys are interested in camcorders, but I have
    	discouraged them so far. The problem is the format used in the
    	US is called NTSC, in Europe a fromat called PAL is used. Does
    	anyone know what format is used in Israel?

    	Thanks

    Camcoders are on the top of the list of items the Israeli tax officers are
    looking for at Ben-Gurion airport. The import tax on this item is at
    least 100%.

   And that's exactly why the young lads are interested in buying
   them :-)

  Which is why they will have to pay the tax when they return to Israel. These
  are not Duty-free items to returning Israelis.

unless, of course, they are practicioners of the ancient but florishing art of
"sneaking expensive things thru the green side of customs" :-) :-)

I strongly recommend that it be pointed out to these boys that camcorders
bought in Colorado almost certainly will be incompatible with their parents'
televisions and other video equipment. This may help keep them (the boys, not
the camcorders) from getting into trouble with their parents and/or Israeli
Customs.

	Thanks for the format information. I have pointed out that with the
	PAL format used in Israel the camcorders purchased here will be
	useless. The other deterent is cost; The camcorders sold in the US
	with either PAL or multi format are about double in price to those
	with NTSC format.

	The four boys are getting along very well. They are starting to
	adjust to the altitude difference. They were in a race last Sunday
	for training and all four did very well staying with the field
	which included pros. This coming Sunday is the Championship race.
