The Bhartiya Janata Pary (BJP) (BJP has good chances winning next
Indian election) has announced
the appointment of Lt. Gen. Jack Fredrick Ralph Jacob
(Retd.) as person incharge of defence and foreign
affairs. Described as an "unsung hero," Gen. Jacob was
the Commander-in-Cheif of the Eastern Command at the
time of the Bangladesh War (1970). He is a member of
India's 10,000-strong Jewish community.
He describes the BJP policy on defense
and foreign affairs as "pragmatic and balanced" and
the policy on relationship with the Middle East as
"very sound."
Asked if the the growing number of former army
personnel joining the BJP would have an effect on serving
army personnel, Gen. Jacobs replied: " ... our army is
very apolitical and should remain so .... In the past
too, many retired army officers have joined different
political parties. It did not affect the army then, and
it won't effect it now."
He also felt that in the present situation, when
the country was "very unstable and fluid ... professionals
like him should come forward and provide their services to
the nation."
