1081.0. "Job for Soviet programmer" by ESIS::GOKHMAN (Boris the Bear) Mon Jun 03 1991 20:47
Hello fellows.
I am trying to help a school friend from the USSR. As you probably
know, with the huge increase in a number of applications from the
Soviet Jews, the US Government greatly limited the number of refugee
visas for entry in the USA. Basically, only people with close relatives
in the US can immigrate. So, my friend has no chance.
Except that, if she manages to get a job offer here, in the US, and
the employer would be willing to apply for an H-1 visa (temporary 2
year work and residence permit, extendable to 5 years) - then she'd be
able to stay.
Briefly ( I don't have her resume but may have it in a few days):
Alla Hanina, age 39, female, graduated from Leningrad University,
Department of Mathematics, with a Masters degree in 1975. Worked as
Math instructor in one of Leningrad colleges, and as a programmer. Will
take ANY level software engineering job, as long as it provides H-1
visa.
I know that the situation is hard, and most places are restricted to
inside hiring only. But if you have a position and allowed outside
hiring - let me know. Alla is now in Albany, NY, staying with friends,
but will visit me in Boston shortly, within a week or two. So,
basically, she'd be available for interviews in all of New England. We
have friends in Texas and California as well, so even an interview
there is possible. At least 15 people from our high school class of 40
are in the US, all in academic or high tech industry positions. That
was a special mathematical high school, so I can vouch that Alla is a
very capable person and will be an asset to any company. Trick is to
find a position quickly, and with H-1 visa. I know visa is not a
problem for DEC - I personally know a few guys from China and India who
started here just like that.
So, let me know if you have any leads.

1081.1 | She can always come *home* | TAVIS::SID | | Tue Jun 04 1991 09:27 | 6 |
| Well, if things don't work out she will always be welcome here...
(Israel, that is, not necesarily Digital). And if she's as good
as you say, there *are* job opportunities in this country.
Good luck,
Sid
