Try using AVN or PAVN to extract your notes. This is a utility that
extracts notes running an unattended BATCH, and makes reading notes
a pleasure.

TAVENG's system disk was replaced by three platters of hand shmura?

| I also miss the activity in this file and I know that my participation
has lessened since it has become so difficult to use Bagels. I cannot
run any batch notes readers from my account so that will not help.
Is there a way to "shadow" this note onto a US based system?

1061.4 | Some ways watch BAGELS off-line | SAINT::STCLAIR | | Fri Apr 19 1991 19:27 | 36 |

There are two programs GET_NOTES and NOTES_EXTRACT that Rich
Kotter (RIPPLE::KOTTERRI) 406-259-3131 has been maintaining
and enhancing. I have attached his mail message about them below. I
recommend them highly as a means for getting notes after hours and/or
off-line. The NEWS feature of AVN may be even more useful for extracting
the unseen notes from a conference on a regular basis in off hours. The
AVN notes conference is described in TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES note
number 1504.* and selected or accessed directly at ODIXIE::AVN.
New versions of GET_NOTES and NOTES_EXTRACT are now available at:
RIPPLE::SLS_DISK:[KOTTERRI.PUBLIC]GET_NOTES.COM
RIPPLE::SLS_DISK:[KOTTERRI.PUBLIC]NOTES_EXTRACT.COM
GET_NOTES:
Version X20 of GET_NOTES is now available. Support has been added for PAN, in
addition to ENOTES, as the extract engine. Other bug fixes and improvements
have been added.
NOTES_EXTRACT:
In cooperation with Phil Wells, the original author of this utility, version
X26 has been produced. NOTES_EXTRACT is now distributed as a command procedure,
which makes it easier for those who are unfamiliar with building EVE section
files. Support has been added for PAN, in addition to ENOTES. A FIND feature
has been added to search for a string in the extract. NOTES_EXTRACT has been
merged with SKIP_NOTES, and improvements have been added to accommodate changes
to EVE.
For more information, see the comments in the procedures. Also, since the
ENOTES conference is now write locked, there are now discussion topics on both
of these utilities in the LESLIE::PAN conference.

1061.5 | I liked it on-line | HPSPWR::SIMON | Curiosier and curiosier... | Sat Apr 20 1991 05:37 | 10 |
| Well, the suggestions to extract the notes may have merits, but in my
view the nicest feature of the notesfile is its feel of "real time".
You read the note, you want to comment, you do it right here and now.
Even usenet have this feeling. No extracting utility will allow to
do the same.
So, does it all mean that short of moving the file back to the US we
are stuck? If so, it is sad, I really liked this conference.

| Well Leo you could always move to Tel Aviv. The response there will be
great!
This also gives you some idea of what it is like accessing Note
Conferences in the US from Israel. Maybe a conpromise would be to move
it to some place in Europe.

That's a great angle! Encourage people to make aliya just in order to get a
good response from Bagels. :-)
I use RNU/PAVN to monitor NOTES files, because I do not have the time to read
NOTES from the US online.
The main problem at present is the network. We have had a major problem here
in Israel for a long time now. It took 10 minutes to copy a 4 block file from
Geneva yesterday. But, "they" are working on the problem, and IS inform me
that a new improved super fast line should be in place soon and all our problems
will go away (well, not quite all.......). Why not wait and see how response
is on 1st May. If there is a major improvement, you can celebrate the event
on Lag B'Omer! If not,...............
Shalom
Baruch (who gets a good response on BAGELS, but on no other NOTES files)

| I won't go into all the technical aspects but there is a net
grid-lock on the link connecting Israel to the rest of the world.
The current link will be replaced with a new line with about
three times the bandwidth in a week or two. It's mostly
installed and testing is currently being performed.

| Further to the previous note from Aharon, I have just seen an advice
from our IS people to the effect that the new improved link is already
in place. I just tried a couple of conferences in the US and Europe and
got a very quick response. So your access to BAGELS from the US should
also be OK now. Try it out and let us know.

Monty, why not let everyone be happy for a few days? You spoil sport!
An estimated time limit for the existing performance was given to me at 6
months. By then it is reckoned that we will have found many new ways to fill
up the band width, and performance will begin to deteriorate. Oh well, let's
enjoy it while we can and see what happens.

How long until the chometz rises?
When I taught networking recently, my hubby (a contractor) suggested I
describe the layers as a connected series of toilets with all the stuff
going down to the bottom pipe. He said, "Well, most of the stuff you
people send on the network is garbage anyway." Not very flattering,
but that one hit home.
Glad we can all communicate again. (For the time being)

| For those of you in the galut who have been wondering why you haven't been able
to get to BAGELS all week, the problem has been with the fancy-shmancy new
cable connecting us with France. The E-net starting working properly again
several hours ago, so hopefully the problem has been fixed.
We've missed you, too.
