There was a one line item in today's VNS News (4/12/91) as follows; "Israel has airlifted the entire Jewish population of Albania to Israel". Could anybody provide any additional details? On the surface, this appears to be positive, but the implication is there was a tragedy which caused this to be necessary. In any case, if true, at least some made it safely to Eretz Yisroel. DL

The "tragedy" is the Stalinist system that Albanians have lived under for 40-odd years. There's a little more in an AP story in today's Boston Globe: Tel Aviv -- The last Jewish immigrants from Albania landed in Israel yesterday. The 16 men, women and children stepped off an El Al airliner into Ben Gurion Airport as Israel was observing Holocaust Day, remembering the 6 million Jews murdered by the Nazis. Reports of Albanians immigrating to Israel have filtered out in recent months, but it was kept secret that they were being moved here en masse. In all, the Jewish Agency said, 298 Albanians have immigrated to Israel since the regime in Tirana began liberalizing in December. It is said 30 more joined relatives in the United States. |
