I saw parve pesadik baby cereal at Landau's in Boro Park; I think it was
Iskowitz.

| We used to break up ladyfinger cookies (Oberlander, I think) and mixed it
with formula. It has the consistency of cereal and probably has some
nutritional value, maybe.

1054.3 | Sort of Passover cream-of-wheat | CADSYS::HECTOR::RICHARDSON | | Mon Mar 25 1991 20:43 | 16 |
| Manischevitz still makes theirs - it is sort of cream of wheat like,
and I don't THINK it is dairy (it might be, since we eat it with milk
anyhow I never checked). I even eat it myself, since I don't like
matzoh brie much, and Paul should not eat too many eggs. I got a
bunch of smoked fish of various sorts, and a bunch of lo-chol cheese -
there is even Passover gravlox this year!!! (Of course, you can't have
the mustard sauce if you are strict about mustard seed, but I love the
stuff even without it.)
On the other hand, the cheerio-like Passover cereals were back again
this year, "new and improved", but last year no one, not even my little
nephew who eats everything, could stand them, so I didn't buy any
yesterday. Your mileage may vary, but we all think they taste like
potato starch with sugar (blah!).

| I believe the hot cereal that Charlotte's referring to is actually just
matzo meal packaged under a different label, so you can make a hot cereal
with matzo meal and liquid.
BTW, there was a curious article in the business section of yesterday's
Boston Globe about the "inventors" of the the Manischewitz pseudo-Cheerios.
They just came up with the concept, hired a consulting firm to do the
development, and license it to Manischewitz. There was no indication
as to how successful it is.

| RE: .0
Pardon me for pointing out the obvious but did you check the
ingrediants? Having a Dairy designation does not always mean that it
contains dairy products. Often a manufacturer will produce dairy
procucts on a line and then clean the equipment but not at the level
that would give it a parve status.
While I'm on the topic anyone know why tunafish is market dairy by some
companies?

1054.6 | Another random question | DECSIM::HAMAN::GROSS | The bug stops here | Mon Mar 25 1991 23:12 | 5 |
| This is strictly a theoretical question. Does anyone know under what
circumstances (if any) it would be OK for an Ashkenazic family to serve
rice cereal to an infant?

1054.7 | Check with your local Rav
| SUBWAY::RSMITH | | Mon Mar 25 1991 23:46 | 3 |
| There are circumstances when it is permitted to feed a baby formula that
contains kitnyos(ie. allergic to all brands except brand XYZ). This may also
apply to baby cereal...why not check with your Rav.

That's probably because they are made with potato starch and sugar :^)
I don't know about these kids. In my day you just packed the arteries
with eggs, matzo, and fat and flushed 'em out with prunes! Nowadays
everybody wants to live past age 45... :^)

| re milchig tuna:
I compared the ingredients on an old pareve can of StarKist with a new
milchig can. The additional ingredient is hydrolized protein. I noticed
that Chicken of the Sea has switched back to pareve, but they also list
hydrolized protein, so they must get it from a different source.

1054.10 | it's really dairy | KOBAL::KOBAL::SCHOELLER | Schoeller - Failed Xperiment | Tue Mar 26 1991 06:02 | 6 |
| The stuff contains non-fat dry milk. It is definitely dairy. The point
about just using matzah meal is good. We will do some more looking. The
point about the formula also provides a reminder.
Thanks,

1054.11 | what's for breakfast? | CADSYS::HECTOR::RICHARDSON | | Tue Mar 26 1991 20:05 | 19 |
| I forgot to check out the hot cereal for dairy ingredients - all the
Pesachdic food is packed in the sewing room until we finish getting the
kitchen ready, so I am not entirely sure what carton the stuff is in.
It wouldn't surprise me if it is basically matzoh meal, although it
seems to be ground more uniformly. Like I said, it isn't bad, and it
contains NO eggs, for a change - we sure end up eating a lot of eggs
during the holiday as it is.
For Dave Gross, who is three aisles over from here (didn't know your
own node had such a provocative name!): my very-strict sister-in-law
checked with her very-strict rabbi last year, because our little nephew
who will eat nearly anything except the fake cheerios is not supposed
to eat much wheat. The word is that she can feed him kitniot (rice
baby cereal), but it has to be prepared with its own utensils and can't
be consumed by anyone else who is not required to eat it for health
reasons - she can't feed it to my nieces, for example, since they can eat
wheat.

1054.12 | My node name | DECSIM::HAMAN::GROSS | The bug stops here | Tue Mar 26 1991 22:05 | 7 |
| My node name reflects an adversarial relationship between it and me.
I also named it right after playing the part of a certain villain in
my temple's Purim schpiel a few years back. You aren't seeing my cluster
alias any more because I am running NOTES on my workstation in a hidden
area and the cluster alias is in a non-hidden area.

1054.13 | Rice cereal should be HOMEmade | GRANPA::AFRYDMAN | | Wed Mar 27 1991 18:07 | 10 |
| Rav Heineman, of the STAR K, says that if one must feed his/her child
rice cereal on Pesach, it should not be a commercial brand since they
have MALT in them. He suggests using a separate pot to cook up your
own rice for a cereal.
Check with your local Rav for more info.

1054.14 | Pareve | CADSYS::HECTOR::RICHARDSON | | Thu Mar 28 1991 21:50 | 7 |
| I dug the box out last night - the stuff I eat is pareve. There is
nothing in it but matzoh flour and water - basically matzoh meal. it
really isn't bad, though, especially with a bit of brown sugar and a
banana.

1054.15 | Why is there MORE work each year? | CPDW::SEIDMAN | Aaron Seidman | Thu Mar 28 1991 22:15 | 9 |
| This morning I shleped the Pesach dishes upstairs (and tonight I carry
down the chumatz). Whew! Once upon a time we had neither the space
nor the money to afford duplicates of many things, so we used to do a
lot of kashering the week before Pesach; I looked forward to just being
able to swap things around. Now I begin to think about my dream
house--it will have two kitchens on a turntable and all I'll have to do
is press a button to change over... :^)

Unfortunately, I'm too old -- my kids are grown and out of the house.
