I'm probably one of the few people who reads both BAGELS and CELT, so I can't resist sending along this poem that appeared in CELT in November. When Ben Briscoe, the mayor of Dublin, was in Boston for the St. Patrick's Day parade in 1988, he read the follwing poem at the Bulger Breakfast (whatever that is): The snow was blowing out of doors, The drifts were piling high, And I could see pedestrians As they were passing by. The faces of my Irish friends Came dimly through the glass As they trudged the icy streets To worship at their Mass. I envy them their strength of heart, The faith that they would view, On an ice cold soggy morning, "It's good to be a Jew". -Yehuda Miklaf

>...the Bulger Breakfast (whatever that is): The "Billy Bulger Breakfast" is a traditional St Patrick's Day happening in Boston, where all local politicians come to "Southie" (=South Boston, the 100% Irish neighborhood in Boston) and honor Billy Bulger, President of the Senate of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Bulger is a notoriously corrupt pol who has been pulling the strings of Massachusetts politics longer than I remember, very much in the tradition of, say, Mayor James Curley, another great Irish pol, reelected Mayor of Boston WHILE IN JAIL (!). Anyway, Billy is gifted with an incredibly acerbic wit and is a real treat to watch, though not to cross. Funny about Briscoe and the Jewish angle... recently Harvard Law professor and Penthouse columnist Alan Dershowitz got into a bitter tiff with Bulger over the oppointment of an allegedly anti-semitic crony of Bulger's to the court. Bulger supposedly used anti-semitiic keywords in lambasting Dershowitz. Ahh, the pleasures of Massachusetts politics...... almost as bad as the Mifleget Ha'Liberalim! -ZAITCH |
