1016.0. "Upcoming fast day--Tenth of Tevet" by GRANPA::AFRYDMAN () Fri Dec 21 1990 21:42
At last night's weekly parsha and halacha shiur given by Rabbi Y. Frand
at the Agudath Israel of Baltimore [150+ people attend regularly and it
is signed for the hearing impaired] he spoke briefly about the upcoming
Fast day of the Tenth of Tevet (next thursday 12/27). Since this fast
day occurs during the winter and is a sunrise to sunset fast... it is
usually a very easy fast. In fact, one is allowed to wake up early,
prior to sunrise, and eat.
He was concerned that this upcoming fast not be treated this way but
that we take it upon ourselves as a real fast.
This day is in memory of the Babylonian King Nebechednezar's(sp)
incursion into Jerusalem which preceeded the eventual fall of the First
Temple.
The present world events... with the present day Babylon=Iraq and its
leader who has publically stated that he wants to be the second
Nebechednezar... are frightening.
Rabbi Frand suggested that we all understand the importance of using
this fast day as an opportunity to do tshuvah (repentance) and pray for
the safety of Clal Yisroel.
