1013.0. "question" by CORREO::RAMOS_J () Wed Dec 12 1990 02:33

I have a friend from Israel who said that 80% of Israel (Jews)
are atheists. I find it odd, because history of Israel is base on
religion. I think ? I have little knowlegde of Jewish history
and culture. That is way I am participating in this conference.
Can some one help me ?

Hola Jos, por fin alguien a quien puedo escribir como se debe!
(at last someone I can write as it shoild be done!)

In my humble view, I believe that about 80% of us here are non-
observant Jews, i.e., we do not follow to the dot (al pie de la
letra) all the TARIAG (613) different Mitzvoth (commandments) the
Sages have found Jews should follow.

To say that we are atheists... Well, we all believe in miracles,
if not, would we be living here?

     Saludos,

Hola or Shalom

I think the term atheist is probably being misused here. It is true that
the majority of the population of Israel is basically secular. Most people
do not go to synagogue or even keep the most basic of religious beliefs.
However, many people, who do not keep the mitzvot, will still say that they
are Jewish when asked, and many have a basic belief in G-d. Many will turn
up for synagogue once a year, on Yom Kippur, and say kaddish (memorial
prayers) when they suffer a bereavement.

The Jewish religion is very central to the history of the people of Israel,
but the modern state has a basis in national as well as religious feelings.
Without the continued existance of the Jewish religion during the years of
the diaspora, there would be no Israel today.

Certainly. It's a miracle! :-)

Einstein was once quoted as saying "The religion I'm not is Judiasm."

Judiasm has been described as a "tribal" religion. I.e., Jews are
a "people" [gente] and the outer trappings of worship are somewhat less
important than in other religions. There are many books written on this
that I would have to refer you to.

Feliz Navidad y feliz ao nuevo.
