973.0. "Jewish nameday question" by NDLIS3::DKELLER () Thu Aug 30 1990 14:06

    Shalom!

    I'm interested in Jewish nameday dates. Does someone know if there's
    a calender or a book available for such things? Or can someone tell
    me the dates for the following names:

    Yoram - Bezalel - Galit - Ilana (Ilanit)

    and vice versa the name for Elul 11 : ???

    Thanks so much for your help,

    L'hit

    Can you clarify what you mean by "Jewish nameday dates?"

973.2Some more expl. ...NDLIS3::DKELLERFri Sep 07 1990 11:179

    As far as I know *lots* of Jewish names have a special day once/year
    relating to their first name. I know there exist calendars for such
    things but I can't find one over here. I think these name days are
    even relating to the prayers but I'm not sure.

    Hope this helps;

973.3It's new to me...MAMTS2::AFRYDMANFri Sep 07 1990 15:284
    I've heard of this among Catholics and their Saints' days. I've never
    come across this among European Jews. ...could it be a Sephardi custom??

973.4One idea...MAMTS2::AFRYDMANFri Sep 07 1990 15:3110
    I just thought of something.

    During Sukkot, each day a new "visitor" is welcomed to the
    Sukkah...they are called the "Ushpezin". So each day is designated for
    a different forefather and (in our family) fore"mother".

    That's the closest that I think we come to having a day designated for
    a specific person/name.

In some siddurim [prayer books], there are a list of names, with
verses associated with them. Could you be referring to this?

If you find one, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

BTW, I assume all this means that someone's expecting good tidings. In
that case, _be'sha'a_tova_u'mutzlachat_ [may all go well and in its proper
time]!

Hi Av! I thought you went into hiding - good luck in your new position!

973.6YES...relating to prayer booksNDLIS3::DKELLERWed Sep 12 1990 15:1612

    Yes...I guess that those name blessings (name days) are relating to
    the siddurim [prayer books].

    If I'm able to find such a calendar or any relating book...I'll let you
    know.

    Anyway, thanks for your help.
