A friend is in a quandry and I thought someone in Bagelland mught be able to help. He is going to be subletting a kosher home this summer and isn't kosher himself. His first question...Can he keep non kosher foods in the freezer, if they are well wrapped? Second...Can he use the microwave for non kosher food? Third...If he uses non kosher foods, how can he rekosher the oven? All advice will be appreciated. thanks ellen

Re: .0 > His first question...Can he keep non kosher foods in the freezer, > if they are well wrapped? > Second...Can he use the microwave for non kosher food? > Third...If he uses non kosher foods, how can he rekosher the oven? The questions are probably moot, since the owner is likely to _kasher_ everything anyway afterwards, if he is concerned about _kashrut_. But for the record: 1) Refrigerators, freezers need only be washed out when coming in contact with non-kosher food. 2) A microwave is _kashered_ by cleaning it thoroughly, and then boiling water in it for several minutes. 3) An oven is a more difficult issue, but if it is self-cleaning, simply running it through the clean-cycle takes care of all problems. As always, a competent authority should be consulted for each situation. Jem | |||||
