950.1Some help with namesALEX::CONNAlex Conn, ZKOTue Jun 19 1990 05:5915
I belong to a small Jewish group that is trying to find a new name. A
number have been suggested mostly revolving around Havurah or Chavura(h).

I have been searching through my Hebrew dictionary and the Jewish catalogs
and find I need help (my Hebrew training is marginal). As far as I can
tell, Havurah stands for "friends" or "fellowship." Is that correct? How
do I know whether to use Havurat or Havurah? (One of the potential names
is Havurat Shalom, if that is correct...)

Another name suggested is Adat Shalom. I do not find "adat" in my
dictionary, but somebody said it stood for "community." Is that correct?

Thanks a lot for your help.

"Fellowship" is a pretty good translation.

The noun is "havura", though it's often transliterated as "chavura", because it
starts with the gutteral letter "chet". If you decide to call it Foo, then the
correct form would be Havurat Foo (or Chavurat Foo). The ending of chavura is
changed because it is the first word in a compound noun; the technical term (in
Hebrew) for this grammatical construct is "smichut".

Technically speaking, your group already is a Havura or havurah, a
group of friends meeting together to study, worship, or pursue some
cause together. There is a national Havura movement that meets
annually in August for all the above reasons. I forgot the national
and/or local address but the Hillel people at any college (try
Brandeis) would know or call Temple Beth El in Sudbury (508) 443-9622.

By the way Havurot Shalom was one of the first organized in the greater
Boston area to become an alternative Jewish community in Somerville.
Many of our leading rabbis who are now in the forties either lived,
studied, or worshipped there. They are still located at 113 College
Ave and the present residents usually answer most of my questions
about Jewish matters. Their phone is (617)-MADFERN. (really!)
