933.0. "Help with a logo please?" by CASP::SEIDMAN (Aaron Seidman) Wed May 09 1990 05:33

Our site is doing a special program in June on Digital as an
international company and I am trying to get hold of one or two
Digital logos in Hebrew. I used to have one (that I got when I visited
Herzlia several years ago) but it got lost in one of my subsequent
    moves. Can anyone supply me?

    My mailstop is VRO6-2/B4.

    					Thanks,

933.1The Hebrew logo is against "company policy"TAV02::SIDWed May 09 1990 10:2421
A couple of years ago, some corporate directive came out about the
logo, indicating that since it was a company symbol, it was important
that it be standard and consistent throughout the corporation. As a
result, Digital Israel stopped using the Hebrew version -- all our
stationery and brochures now only have the regular English version.

If you want some interesting info about the logo (who designed it, when,
its evolution, other rules [such as the fact that the lower case letters are
supposed to be transparent -- that is if the logo is in white, on a blue
background, the letters should be blue. You can't have a red and white logo
on a blue background]), then look at the text of a Postscript file with
the logo in it (such as an SPD -- type the file, rather than printing it
on a Postscript printer) and you'll find a whole explanantion about the logo.
This also explains why Postscript files are about a million times larger
than they could be. Anyway, this paragraph is not exactly bagels-related
but I thought it was interesting.

In any case, Aaron, I am sending you by interoffice mail a piece of
stationery with the Hebrew logo. I hope it gets to you in time.

The reason that the Hebrew logos went away is because there are (valid) concerns
about trademark abuse. Companies that play loose with their trademarks (even
internally) are apt to lose them (ie: Thermos).

Digital's Jerusalem facility is housed in the top 2 floors of a building
in the Talpiot Industrial Zone. On the north side of the building, at the
upper right hand corner (as you face it), is a large sign with the standard
approved logo (in letters a meter or so high). At the upper left hand corner
is a similar sign with the Hebrew logo.

So, bring a camera to Jerusalem and take a picture(s) of the logo(s). The
parking lot on the roof of the Hypercol, across the street, should give
you a good vantage point.

And be sure to stop by while you're in the area, Aaron. It's been quite
a while since we saw each other.

I did!! I have, next to me in my office, a picture of the DEC building in
Jerusalem from my trip there in '87 (of course, it's taken from the ground,
not up on a roof!!)

Shouldn't the English one be on the left and the Hebrew one be on the right?

    Thanks for the information!

I am a bit curious about the legal issue; it is possible for a company
to have more than one trademark. In fact, I have in front of me
release notes for one of our products that lists 21 Digital trademarks
referred to in the document. I would think we ought to be able to
    register alternative-alphabet trademarks as well.

p.s. I have a picture of the Herzlia building; the one in Jerusalem did
not exist when I was there last. Now that we've paid our last college
tuition bill, we may be able to afford to travel again. :^)
933.9Hebrew logo triviaTAVENG::GOLDMANTue May 15 1990 10:4212
The reason that they decided to stop using the Hebrew logo was PR
related, not legal. The reasoning was that since the logo was
used both in English and Hebrew the "message" was being diluted
and people were not necessarily associating both logos with the
   same company.

As to the Hebrew Digital sign in Jerusalem; if I recall
correctly, that sign originally resided on one of the Herzlia
buildings. It was removed and donated to the VLSI in Jerusalem
when the bilingual logo ban occurred. Jerusalem, as we know, is a
holy city and therefore not always governed by the normal set of
rules which apply to the rest of the world!
933.10It's recognizable here!JAIMES::WAKYOnward, thru the Fog...Tue May 15 1990 19:5610

Gee, that's too bad. It doesn't seem to be the case here though - I have
the Hebrew logo on a bumper sticker, and it's SO recoginizable as Digital
that I've had dozens of folks comment on it being a DEC sign, even if they
can't read ANY Hebrew!

Call Peter Philips in Concord. He's in charge of corporate identity on
logos, stationery, trucks, communication, etc.. He'll tell it right..
or the way it's supposed to be. He also knows all the legal stuff.
He's striving to get us to have consistency in all things (someday
he'll work on buildings) that says Digital
