931.0. "Questions about Rashi school" by CIMNET::TOBIN_D () Thu May 03 1990 16:07

Does anyone have any experience with Rashi - the reform day school in
Newton? My wife has been looking into it for our daughter (who will be
entering 2nd grade next year). Virtually all of the feedback she has
gotten has been positive, the negatives being lack of a library and lack
    of physical education.

I'd be interested in anyone's personal experiences. Or do you know
anyone who has sent a child to Rashi and then withdrawn? That might
    make an interesting perspective.

    Thanks for the help.

Dan

I haven't heard anything one way or the other about the Rashi school. I do
know several people who send their kids to Schechter if that is being
considered.

My daughter attends Rashi, she is in kindergarten. Even though I am
not a member of the Reform movement, (in fact I oppose it) I am a
supporter of the school. The reason being is that I think that Rashi
is a good compromise between Yeshiva/Maimonedes and secular/public
    school.

The children ARE receiving a Jewish education, and the secular half is
excellent so far. Schechter wouldn't accept Shosh because she didn't
turn five until November, and Schechter requires that the child
entering their kindergarten be 5 in September. Schechter is also too
far a schlep for us, being way out in the corner of Newton bordering on
    West Roxbury/Needham, etc.

I have nothing against Schechter per se, it's an excellent school.
However they only go up to the sixth grade, while Rashi now has a
third/fourth grade and has plans to go all the way to high school.

If you need more info contact Rabbi Rim Meirowitz at the school (can't
remember the number offhand, but they're listed), mention that Shoshi's
daddy referred you. You can send me mail, but my DTN is undetermined yet
as I have moved into a new job at the Boston (Andover) ACT.
