I will be going to Israel as part of the MetroWest (Northern NJ) Kehilla Mission March 4-12. We are going over early, leaving NY on March 1 with some of the group. My wife is the 'big macher' this time as she is Director of Public Information for MetroWest Federation, I'm tagging along. We will be based at the Laromme. While the schedule is pretty full (visits all over the country, briefings by govt officials, etc.), we do have the time until the rest of the group arrives (from the 2nd until Sunday March 1), some free time the afternoon and evening of Wednesday, March 7, all day Saturday March 10 and late afternoon of Sunday March 11. I would like to get a chance to get on a terminal and 'check in' as well as meet some of my 'lantsmen'. As I'm a (pardon the expression) 'ham' (WD4DAA/2) I've applied for a reciprocal license and am bringing a 2 meter handy-talkie. Faxed the application to 4X1AT on Tuesday, but have no reply yet. My questions are: 1. will I have a problem with Customs with the talkie? 2. any way to get on a terminal to check mail? 3. any DEC_kosher_hams and suggestions for repeaters to use? also is PL necessary? -Barry-

892.1 | No problem for us back in 1983, anyways | CADSYS::RICHARDSON | Wed Feb 28 1990 19:30 | 16 | |
Paul and I didn't have any trouble getting an HT into Israel when we visited there, but that was back in 1983. Our recriprocal radio licenses never did arrive here, so we brought along extra copies of our American licenses and visited the Israeli version of the FCC, which was in the Shalom Tower building in Tel Aviv (I don't know if they have moved this agency to Jerusalem, but if it is still in Tel Aviv you can't miss this building as it is, or was, anyway, the tallest building in Israel), and picked up the 4X licenses the morning after we arrived. Several locals were hanging around the ministry offices, probably waiting to take exams or something, and they gave us lots of info about local repeaters and such. We were even able to talk to people in OD-land on one of the northern repeaters, from Tiberias - the Leanese guy invited us to cross the border and visit his home, but that didn't sound like a great plan to us so we declined! /Charlotte (KQ1F) + Paul (K1XM) |
