873.1 | this week's episode in the soap opera | ERICG::ERICG | Eric Goldstein | Sun Jan 21 1990 01:59 | 20 |
| Basically, there was a power struggle between the editorial staff and the
new publisher. The publisher, being the boss, won. A large number of senior
reporters left the paper.
From what I have read, the issue seems to have been control over editorial
policy. The editorial staff clearly felt that the publisher was demanding
more control than is appropriate. Whether or not the publisher actually
wants to change the political orientation of the editorial page, and in
what direction, is not clear. As the Post's editorial policy is considered
somewhat to the left of the center of the Israeli political spectrum, there
naturally is speculation that the publisher wants to move it to the right.
(If the Post were right of center, there would be speculation that he wanted
to move it to the left.) Now that the publisher has gotten his way, I guess
that we'll see what (if any) changes there are in the future.
Some of those who left the Post announced that they would start a new English-
language paper. If so, I hope that they are better organized (as a business)
than the Nation (the most recent unsuccessful attempt) was. The Post is
still a pretty rinky-dink paper, and a little competition might raise the
level of English-language journalism in this country.

| Interesting article in the April '90 Moment magazine summarizing the history
and issues around the changes at the Post. Seems they're going to try editions
in French, Spanish and Russian!

| I saw an ad in the current issue of "Commentary" for subscriptions to the
international edition of the Jerusalem Post.
Four issues free with no obligation; after that you can renew for another
25 weeks for $24.95. "New subscribers only." 800 955-8559.
I took them up on it; they said it will take 3-4 weeks to start, so the four
weeks will be just before my trip to Jerusalem.

| .3> Four issues free ...
I'd call that a fair and reasonable price for the Post.

| I didn't renew my Jerusalem Post subscription when it expired.
But I think they sold my name. This arrived in the mail today:
"This is your personal card. Please remove."

873.6 | which news source is best? | OUTSRC::HEISER | Hoshia Nah,Baruch Haba B'shem Adonai | Wed Mar 22 1995 18:18 | 9 |
| I noticed recently that a lot of U.S. newspapers get their Middle
Eastern news from Islamic news services. For this reason (and also to
be able to see unbiased news on U.S. events), I'd like to ask which is
the best Israeli news publication to subscribe to. I've noticed a lack
of praise on the Jerusalem Post. Any information (i.e., phone or
address) would be appreciated.
thanks,
Mike
