871.0. "Soveit Jewry Benefit, 23 Jan." by ULTRA::WITTENBERG (Secure Systems for Insecure People) Thu Jan 18 1990 16:29

On Tuesday, January 23, a special performance of "The Promise" will be
staged by the New Repertory Theater, to benefit "Action for Soviet Jewry"
(ASJ). This work of famed playwright Aleksei Arbuzov has enjoyed great
success in the Soviet Union, under the title "My Poor Dear Marat". This is
its first Boston production.

The show introduces three characters, who meet as teenagers during the
Siege of Leningrad. It follows their maturation, and their relationship with
each other, through the post-war period and into modern Russia,
illustrating the changes in their hopes and dreams as their society offers
painful choices.

Curtain time is 7pm. Following the performance, a discussion with the
audience will be led jointly by Larry Lane, artistic director of the New
Rep, and a staff member of ASJ, to explore comparisons with the current
social, political and human rights situation in the Soviet Union.

The New Rep is a professional theater company, which has received high
critical acclaim. It is located at 54 Lincoln Street, in Newton. It is
convenient both to Route 9 and the Lincoln Highlands "T" stop, and has
ample parking available.

Tickets are priced at $20 each. To reserve tickets, contact the ASJ office
at (617)893-2331. Tickets may also be purchased at the door prior to the
show.
